More than a million Turks rallied on Sunday in support of secular democracy amid an unprecedented stand-off between the Islamist-rooted government and the army over presidential elections.
As calls for calm mounted, Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, a former Islamist and the sole candidate in the race to become president, ruled out withdrawing his bid, defying the army’s threat of intervention in politics.
The prospect of Gul becoming head of state has alarmed secularists who fear the strict separation of state and religion will be eroded and Islam will creep into all fields of life if he is elected.

Manchester United managed a win at Old Trafford against AC Milan with a final score 3-2. It’s not a bad result and it does mean that AC Milan must score at home. The difficulty for Manchester United is that a 1-0 win at home will give the Milanese a place in the final at Athens courtesy of the 2 away goals. AC Milan are strong at home but nothing is impossible.
Chelsea got off a on a good start with a 1-0 win at home against Liverpool but will it be enough to get them through at Anfield to mae the Champions League Final. Personally I think Liverpool are vulnerable at Anfield – Arsenal proved that this season – and I think Chelsea could get through to the final with a 0-0 score at Anfield.
The return legs for both games will be played this upcoming week!

I was sent this link this yesterday and it was too tempting to not post it on the website. No matter what, Euro 2004 will be one of, if not the most greatest moment of Greek sporting history.
Enjoy the memories …

Watch Nikos Makropoulos video “Krisi” from his CD “De Me Ksereis Kala”. A good Laiko track exemplifying the strong vocals and bouzouki sounds that we have been missing from other newer singers.

Finally a singer that has proven that Laika are not outdated or forgotten.
Some of us still enjoy listening to Greek music with a stonger emphasis on traditional Laika sounds but would also like to hear it coming from newer artists. We can’t keep relying on Vassilis Karras or Zafeiris Melas to deliver nor on the more contemporary Laiko singers such as Notis Sfakianakis. Hristos Pazis was a hopeful especially after his “Auti I Foni” release but has not been able to deliver consistently since, especially after the dissapointing Tzini!
Nikos Makropoulos seems to have been around for a while on the Greek music scene but for us that are observers from a little further, he seems to have appeared out of nowhere. Most of us first heard Makropoulos on the now famous zeibekiko ”Katastasi Ektaktou Anagkis” on his live CD that also contained a handful of studio recordings.
His latest release “De Me Ksereis Kala” – You Don’t Know Me Well - in my opinion shows promise of a revival of the Laiko song. The CD contains 18 songs and don’t get me wrong there are non-Laika tracks that appear as well. Nikos delivers a few good bouzouki tracks as well as the more usual ballads, in particular “Den Paei Allo” featuring Stamatis Gonidis on backing vocals for the chorus and “Den Me Ksereis Kala” featuring songwriter Bo on vocals.
My favorite track is the melodic “Eho Allaxei” a song that forges the Laiko revival. “Krisi” is another great song – you can have a listen to it, I have posted the youtube clip in the Greek Music category. It’s a great song highlighting Makropoulos’ talent.
If you like an artist that is to sing well and sing it live just as well or even better then, Nikos Markopoulos is worth the listen and with 18 tracks on the CD it’s worth investment.

So the question arises once again … is it worth the $274 to become a platinum member with Sydney’s A-League representative? Personally last year’s performance from the team was a little dissapointing.
We could attribute this to a few factors. Firstly their season started with a few too many injuries and in my opinion the most influential being the injury to Carney. Secondly the spectacle of Yorke’s departure and how it would’ve demotivated the rest of the team. Thirdly the loss of Littbarski as the coach and replacing him with Butcher.
I won’t discredit Butcher’s career. His contribution to English football definitely left its mark but what had he proven as a coach and would the style suit the A-League. Personally I think the choice was a misguided attempt to “attract” the English fans that live around the Bondi area.
Despite these issues Sydney still managed to come only 2 games away from a spot in the final. Fair effort I say but it was not done with a lot of flair; although the second last game against Newcastle made me think twice because Sydney played a great game. Unfortunately we lost our cool in the final game against Newcastle and it meant the season was over.
Enter Branko Culina and the Asian Champions League. A win against Shanghai away and a draw in Sydney against one of Asia’s football powerhouses. I went to the game in Sydney against Urawa and I must say I saw the best half of football Sydney has ever played. Branko’s technical passion of the game was evident but unfortunately our fitness is not there yet to meet the demands for the style we played.
If I knew now that Culina would be the coach for next year my decision to renew would be easier to make. But management’s frail attempts to attract crowds with names rather than tactical decisions may mean another season of much fanfare but not mouth watering football

AC Milan surprised many of us this morning at the Acer Arena in Munich. After a 2-2 result in Milan many expected Bayern to take control at home and get through to the semis. The Italians though in 4 minutes of the first half closed down the game. First goal thanks to Seedorf and a second from the veteran Inzaghi clinched the win and a spot in the semi finals.
Liverpool managed another European win 1-0 at Anfield and have set up a semi-final rematch against Chelsea. The two EPL teams met in the Champions League semi final 2 years ago, won by Liverpool who went on to win the competition.
So it’s Liverpool up against Chelsea and AC Milan against Manchester United, with an English team guaranteed a spot in the final in Athens in May.

Manchester United this morning delivered a crushing defeat to Italian side Roma this morning at Old Trafford. The final score 7-1 will be marked as a dark day in the history of the Romans.
In the other game Chelsea managed a last second goal in Sevilla’s home ground of the Mestalla to defeat the Spaniards 1-2 away. The first defeat for the Spaniards by an English team on their home soil.
Two games remain, AC Milan away to Bayern Munich and Liverpool host PSV Eidenhoven with a 3 away goal advantage.
