Eurovision 2007 Wrap Up
Posted by evdomada on May 13, 2007
Another Eurovision gone and congratulations to Serbia!
I would like to state up front that I’m not so sure if that research paper from the university in Reading UK will help me change my mind that voting is not influenced by any political swaying. It was evident again that certain “regions” or “blocs” voted for each other, irrespective on the quality of the song.
Now let’s get to the songs …
I can’t say that I was impressed this year with the quality of entrants but there were a few highlights and they did rise in the end at the top of the voting. There were many entrants just making up the numbers but they add to the entertainment of the spectacle.
During the show while one song was performed after the other the stand out performances for me where Ukraine and Russia. Ukraine for their comic approach to an okay song and the Russians … well I was impressed by their pussycat style delivery to their act. My first impression of the Serbian song was that it was a bit too melodramatic for Eurovision but I was impressed by her voice.
At the break though when they reminded us of all those that sang, I realised that the Serbian song actually did have that anthem feel to it and Europeans love an anthem.
I admit though that at the breakjust before the voting commenced, I did SMS a fellow Eurovision junkie that my bet was with Ukraine taking honours. I didn’t think that Serbia was going to run away with the winning prize, in fact I thought that the Russian pussycats would rank higher.
Sarbel’s performance lacked something for me. He had the semi dressed girls around him maybe hoping that it would sway some votes but at the end he did end up in a position worthy of the song.
Other memorable moments …
- Spain’s boy band buckle bonanza
- The French guy with that stuffed toy on his shoulder running laps of the stage
- The lead singer from that band that sang ”You Spin Me Round” seemed to have made a come back to lead the Swedish band
- The Bulgarians with those drums and the shrilling falsetto that she tried to pull off
- The Moldovan lead singer with the Cher outfit and Evanesence style howling
Of course there were others but they have already started to fade away in my memory. If you have your own memorable moments please email them and I will share them around.
