Eurovision Discussion …

I know it’s over and done with but on Saturday’s show there was an interesting question that was put to us by some listeners that we had on air.
The issue is whether Greece should be singing in English or whether we should only sing in our own language. It was pointed out by some listeners that if Serbia could win in their native tongue why couldn’t Greece or Cyprus?
I have to agree that I am a bit disappointed that we are singing in English and not in Greek but as someone else pointed out, English is definitely Greece’s second major language. In fact it’s not only the case in Greece but it’s also the worldwide business language.
Still, we are a nation of people proud of our ancestral past, proud of our civilisation with its history, philosophers, tragedies, architecture etc why aren’t we also promoting our much loved language?
Is victory in the Eurovision so important that we are willing to compromise our language?
Personally I believe it’s hard to compare the Serbian win with other nations that sing in English. Serbia scored 12 pointers from other nations that can understand Serbian if not completely at least partially (I think) – Croatia, Slovenia, FYROM, Bulgaria and the former Soviet states. I must point out that irrespective of this comprehension issue, it was the best sung song on the night. She had a great voice and the song seemed to be a highly emotionally charged song for us that couldn’t understand what it was about.
Still the question will linger in some of the Greek’s minds … let’s wait for next year’s entries and see what’s on offer for the Greek public to vote for and who will represent us at Eurovision
