AC Milan – European Champions

Posted by evdomada on May 24, 2007

AC Milan this morning took their revenge against Liverpool defeating them 2-1 in Athens.

The Italian side was able to reverse their loss from two years ago in Constantinople against Liverpool.  Those who watched the 2005 Champions League final would remember how AC Milan squandered a 3-0 half-time lead to lose in the end in a penalty shoot-out.

This morning Liverpool were the better team, in particular in the first half but they were unable to capitalise on their dominance.  Instead AC Milan were the first to score in the 44th minute through an opportunistic deflection from Inzaghi off a Pirlo free kick.

The second half was a tough battle with Liverpool pushing up into AC Milan’s territory threatening to score.  Again AC Milan were able to capitalise in the 82nd minute when they broke through the defence through Inzaghi who was able to score his second goal.

Many of us were waiting for the Liverpool comeback and it seemed like it was going to happen when they scored in the 89th minute.  The referee official’s board indicated 3 minutes of extra time but the equaliser didn’t come and AC Milan were crowned champions.

I did notice that Liverpool’s manager Benitez was angered that the referee seemed to blow full time around 2:35 minutes into stoppage time.  Maybe he thought that an extra minute was all his men needed to level the game.  It’s all speculation and it is the referee’s discretion when he blows the final whistle.  Imagine how Ancelloti would’ve felt if the reverse was to happen; in other words the referee allowed the game to go into the 4th minute of stoppages and Liverpool equalised.

Well, another season of European football has come and gone.  It’s for us to follow the European summer transfer window and who will manage to lure which players to their clubs.

There are still the South American leagues that are still on for those who just can’t stop watching football.

I guess if you are still desperate, you could watch Rugby Union or at worse Rugby League …
