Eurovision finals … not long to go!

Posted by evdomada on May 13, 2007

Well it all happens at approximately 5am Sydney time.

If we are curious we will probably get on the internet and see who has won.  Some of the Eurovision faithful will do their best to avoid the news updates so that it doesn’t spoil the surprise that will be seen later on in the day.

Others that own a  satellite connection to Greece’s ERT will have an opportunity to watch it live.  I thought of doing that but the BBC coverage that we get on SBS is much more entertaining.

The final list of participants have now been finalised … see here.

Research on Eurovision voting??

Posted by evdomada on May 13, 2007

Someone has gone to through the trouble to conduct a research on the voting for Eurovision.

Many of us have become sceptics ever since the viewer call-in vote was introduced in the competition, wondering whether diplomatic or historical ties influence the voters and therefore the final result.

Have a read of this article and see whether you feel more at ease that the winner will be worthy of the title.

The British Committee for the Restitution of the Parthenon Marbles – vote now!

Posted by evdomada on May 9, 2007

It’s great to see that the fight to return the Parthenon Marbles is still going strong even post the Athens 2004 Olympiad.

Most of us would remember the feverish lobbying and diplomatic attempts that were made to return the Parthenon Marbles – also known as the Elgin Marbles – in time for the Athens 2004 Olympics.  The return  of the marbles for many, coinciding with the return of the Olympiad to their spiritual home, would have been an opportune time to correct the wrong that has been done to Hellenistic culture for so many years.

Despite assurances and strong support worldwide by Hellenes and others that love the Hellenistic culture, the British Museum with the support of the government were able to hold onto the Parthenon Marbles.

Now, here is an opportunity for us again to get behind the cause to have the marbles returned where they belong!

Notis – Nihtes Magikes

Posted by evdomada on May 7, 2007

Notis Sfakianakis released a new CD last month titled “Nihtes Magikes”.  A live recording featuring his more recent hits as well as a few Notis classics.

Admittedly when I heard that he was releasing something new I had hoped it was a studio album.  It’s the excitement of hearing a new song I think.

In any case “Nihtes Magikes” showcases Notis great voice which has not left him as yet.  It also demonstrates his ability to still entertain his followers and visitors to his performances.

Notis delivers many of his new songs from his newer works that I think are great songs … and he delivers them well as expected.  There are also many Notis classics which will bring back memories from Notis “glory days” and which he still sings very well.  Notis also includes a few classics from other artists as well as a few obscure songs which I always like to hear him deliver.

As with all live recordings the quality is not the best (compared to a studio recording) and there are also those moments when the crowd is invited to sing the chorus – something that annoys a few of us that want to hear the artist and not an attempt at group karaoke.

Still if you want a CD that captures this great artist in his live format then this is a decent acquisition to add to your music collection.  It has definitely being added into mine!

Rating 7/10

Eurovision … Cyprus entry is in french???

Posted by evdomada on May 7, 2007

In anticipation for this week’s Eurovision song contest, I went on a youtube hunt for this year’s entries for a sneak preview.

Firstly I have to admit that I am a Eurovision fan for the last 20 years or so.  So I consider myself a Eurovision expert … kind of.

Anyway back to the original point of this story …

I heard a few songs which will bring a few smiles to us this weekend, mainly because in typical Eurovision fashion, a few songs are just simply wrong but funny.

I then looked for Evridiki’s song to see what the Cypriots will be presenting.  At first I was trying to make out what Evridiki was saying as she does have that husky kind of voice which I admit I do not mind.

After a few seconds of my brain trying to compute the information I was informed by my sis-in-law that it was in French.  I said “In French???  Why would the Cypriots put forward an entry sung in French???”

I guess some of us believe that we should all go back to singing in our native languages rather than most entries now being sung in English – so why not sing in French I guess.

Manchester United Champions Again

Posted by evdomada on May 7, 2007

The Barclays English Premier League Championship has been won by Manchester United.

Chelsea were unable to win away to Arsenal last nite and the draw at the Emirates stadium gave Manchester United the gap it required to seal the championship.  United were also able to win in the Manchester derby against City and that also was a step towards their conquest.

Chelsea now can only hope that they can avenge their championship loss on May 19th when they will meet Manchester United in the FA Cup final.  It will be the first FA Cup back at the new Wembley Stadium after 7 years of it being hosted in Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium.

Chelsea and Manchester United will have a FA Cup warm-up in the now meaningless match (in terms of the championship and the points of course) for the league game next week.

Greek Cup Upset

Posted by evdomada on May 7, 2007

After 23 years Larissa manged a major upset in the Greek Football Association Cup on Saturday night defeating major Athenian side Panathinaikos 2-1 to win the cup!   For those who love an upset and football fairytales of David defeating Goliath this was the game to watch this season.

Larissa wins Greek Cup

Panathinaikos were the sure favorites for the encounter and had many chances to do so but were squandered.  In particular in the 94th minute when Mantzios missed what looked like an open goal to equalise and send the match into extra time.

The two had already met a week ago in the Superleague Round 29 match which ended in a 1-1 draw in Larissa’s home ground.

Manager Donis was also part of the legendary team that won the Championship back in the 1987-88 season.  For those who remember, Donis was one of our first major Greek exports and played for Blackburn in their hey day.

Now many questions are now hovering over the future of Panathinaikos’ coach, as his team has not been able to win a game in its last 6 matches, since defeating major rivals Olympiakos in Karaiskaki on the 4th March.  These string of results includes 3 home losses in a row against Ergotelis (0-1) Atromitos (1-2) and Aris (0-1).

Larissa also can’t spend too much time celebrating with a crucial final match in the Superleague this weekend.  They must defeat Kalamaria away to ensure that Iraklis does not push them into the relegation zone.  Iraklis has a difficult match away at Xanthi which they must win and hope that Larissa lose so that they remain in the Superleague.

In any case, here is a great clip with highlights from the Greek Cup and Larissa’s celebrations.

Panathinaikos win Euroleague

Posted by evdomada on May 7, 2007

Another chapter of Greek dominance in world basketball was written this morning with Panathinaikos defeating CSKA Moscow in the Euroleague final 93-91 in Athens’ OAKA indoor stadium.

PAO Euroleague Champions

Greek basketball currently hold the European Championships, the runner-up position in the World Championship and now the elite European club championship.

This Panathinaikos 4th Euroleague win making them the most successful Greek basketball team in Europe, followed by Aris, PAOK and Olympiakos who have all won an equivalent championship in their history but have not matched Panatha’s record wins.

I have included a few clips in order to commemorate the historical win.  I must add that they are the arch rivals of my beloved Olympiakos but a true fan must acknowledge a great rival that has achieved a great feat for itself but has also once again raised the profile of Greece on the world stage.

Eurovision 2007!!!

Posted by evdomada on May 2, 2007

This year representing Greece with his song “Yiasou Maria” is Sarbel ,who won the national Greek final, and is now qualified to compete at the Eurovision final on 12th May 2007 in Helsinki. The catchy “Yiasou Maria” is composed by Marcus Englof and Alex Papaconstantinou , and is written by Mack. Hopefully Sarbel brings Greece as much success as Rouvas, Paparizou and Vissi were able to achieve in the past!

Meanwhile, Cyprus will be represented by the popular Evridiki.  Evridiki will be singing her hit “Comme ci, Comme ca”, written by Dimitris Korgialas and Poseidonas Giannopoulos. This song is bound to have a positive impact on the voting toll.

The Eurovision Song Contest final will be held on the 12th May in Helsinki and can be viewed on SBS channel.
