Greece Summer 2007 – Concerts

Posted by evdomada on July 31, 2007

Many artists take a break from the major clubs of Athens and Thessaloniki and go out to perform in the regional areas and islands.  So summer is an opportunity to maybe catch a favorite singer either close to your visiting town or island or while you’re being a tourist around the nation.

Here are a few of the artists that are touring around the country thanks to athinorama.gr

Nikos Portokaloglou

The singer made famous to our younger friends or newcomers with his song “Thalassa Mou Skoteini” from the movie Brazilero.  Of course Portokaloglou has been around a lot longer than that with his rock-folk group Fatme.

Here are some of the places he will be performing at:

August
4th – Halkidiki
11th – Grevena
19th – Mytilini Harbour

September
7th – Beer Festival at Neo Faliro, Pireaus
8th – Karopi
16th – Eleusina

Mihalis Hatzigiannis

Hatzigiannis is a favorite for most Greek pop fans and I’ve been told he is a great performer live.
As you can see from his schedule, he will be a very busy man this summer crossing most of the country in 30 days!!

August
1st Aidipso
2nd Igoumenitsa
3rd Kastoria
4th Naxos
5th Paros
6th Santorini
8th Syro

26th Xanthi

30th and 31st Edessa

September
3rd Lykavittos Athens
9th Kozani
10th Larisa
Giannis Kotsiras

Kotsiras is celebrating his 10 years in the music industry and he is sharing the celebrations with his faitful.

His schedule is as follows:

August
1st Megalopoli
4th Halkidiki
8th Halkida
12th Kos

Nikolopoulos and Dimitris Mpasis

For those that prefer a more laiko experience then this concert will not disappoint.  Nikolopoulos is one of the most successful songwriters and bouzouki players though the last 3 decades.  Mpasis has also proven himself as a great voice and will be a great singer to accompany Nikolopoulos on this tour.

Greece lose in UEFA U’19′s final

Posted by evdomada on July 29, 2007

Unfortunately although they had the upper hand for most of the match, Greece lost to Spain in the UEFA U-19′s final in Austria last night.  The final score was 1-0 with Spain scoring in the 38th minute.

Altough we lost, we should be happy that the future looks bright for Greek football.  Many of the young stars will be playing in this year’s Greek Superleague so hopefully they can gain more experiences at top level football.  Hopefully they will be stars when the time arrives for qualifiers for the next world cup.

UEFA Under 19′s: Greece in the Final!!

Posted by evdomada on July 25, 2007

The Under 19′s Greek team has managed to defeat the Germans 2-3 to make the final against the Spaniards!!  Greece played with 10 men for the last third of the game but still managed to score and grit out a victory.

It’s Greece’s first appearance in an Under 19′s UEFA Championship.  Let’s see if the youngsters can repeat the success of the senior team.

Personally I am more excited at the prospect of these young players eventually playing in the senior squad and hopefully achieving the same successes.

UEFA Under 19′s Championship

Posted by evdomada on July 23, 2007

Greece’s under 19′s team has managed to secure a semi-final position in the UEFA Under 19′s Championship.  They finished the table in second spot behind Spain and both teams gathered 5 points each.  Based on the usual 1st places will play the 2nd placed in the other group, Greece will be playing against Germany in the semi-final.

This can only be seen as good news for the future national sides with a good crop of juniors coming through the ranks.

When Will We Have Had Enough??

Posted by evdomada on July 23, 2007

This following clip I believe was from an episode of Boston Legal with James Spader putting together an impressive speech.  Although it refers to the political and social system in the US, we here in the land Down Under are not far behind in what is happening to our freedom of speech.

Harry Potter and Aeschylus’ The Oresteia

Posted by evdomada on July 23, 2007

I had to add this to the site ….

I opened the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows book to start reading the first few pages and to my surprise it begins with a quote from Aechylus’ The Oresteia.

Something to be proud of I think for one of ancient Greece’s greatest tragedy writers. Imagine a text over 2,000 years old by the Athenian Aeschylus being read by millions of readers worldwide.

Even in a Harry Potter book Hellenism is at the forefront!!

Harry Potter … final book out … are you going to read it too??

Posted by evdomada on July 23, 2007

I’m still amazed that there are people out there that have not yet read any Harry Potter books.  I too was one of those that scoffed and laughed at adults that read it …. until someone at work said to me to just read it.

I read the first 2 books in a week or so …. and since then I have been hooked!!

So today I purchased my copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and will begin to read it tomorrow …
