Elections in Greece vs Eurobasket

Posted by evdomada on August 22, 2007

Kostas Karamanlis has decided to call an early election in Greece which is to be held on 16th September.

For those of us that sort of follow the Greek news, it seems that the decision has come out of nowhere.  Of course PASOK’s leader Giorgos Papandreou welcomed the news stating that it’s because the Nea Dimokratia party have no solutions to Greece’s problems.

What else would an opposition leader say?

Personally I think that Nea Dimokratia will win easily with the majority of Athenians being content with the economic progress of the nation under their custodianship.  Also, as with the situation here in Australia, the opposition is a bit weak in leadership and direction of their potential policies.

On the lighter side though, the elections have brought some concern to many Greeks …

The concern for many in Greece is that the election is being held on the same day as the championship final for the European Basketball Championship.

What if Greece is in the final??

Many have written into Greek television shows stating their concern of being able to vote and the game being on the same day.

Of course the last time I checked, voting in Greece is compulsory.  So if the dilemma is too hard to handle they won’t go and vote I suppose.

AEK lose first match for Champions League spot

Posted by evdomada on August 17, 2007

Unfortunately AEK couldn’t come back to Athens with a win or any advantage for the 2nd leg match. AEK went down 2-0 to a better Sevilla on the day.

All is not lost yet for the dikefalo as a good result in Athens is still possible and so too the spot in this season’s Champions League. Let’s hope for Greek football that AEK have a good game in Athens.

More information on AEK’s preparation can be read on Sport-FM’s site.

Sevilla and AEK first leg match for a European Champions League spot

Sevilla and AEK will be playing in their first leg match this Thursday morning Sydney local time (4:46AM AEST). AEK has already arrived in Spain and are preparing for the big game. A draw is a minimum for AEK if they want a chance to then snare a win in Athens the following week.

It’s a difficult task for the Greek team, especially since Sevilla has already proven on the weekend that it can even defeat Real Madrid in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup. That game ended 1-0 in Sevilla’s favor.

AEK does have a good team this year with stars such as Rivaldo and Limberopoulos up front. They also have a good blend of new and old talent, especially with the experienced players such as Dellas, Zikos and Kafes. If there was a year that they could challenge Sevilla, then it’s ths one.

All Greek football fans will be hoping that AEK perform well and hopefully become the second team alongside Olympiakos that will be playing in the European Champions League this season.

ASIO assessment of Haneef

Posted by evdomada on August 3, 2007

It’s interesting to read that Australia’s intelligence agency ASIO did not think Haneef was a security threat to Australia yet Kevin Andrews and the government still thought it was best to revoke his visa.

Admittedly I don’t know if the government actually ignored ASIO’s assessment- you’d hope that they didn’t – but I can’t recall Kevin Andrews or John Howard acknowledging that ASIO didn’t think Haneef was a security threat to Australia.

The article by The Bulletin is an interesting read in the continuing saga of the Haneef case.  In particular the ASIO comment that the supposed link to Al Qaeda is considered a rumor or gossip in “intelligence agency” speak.

Ερωτας Season 2 Finale

Posted by evdomada on August 2, 2007

Curiosity got the best of me again!!

I had heard that Erotas on Antenna aired its final episode for season 2 on July 13 in Greece.

For us here in Australia that watch Erotas on Antenna Pacific, we have to wait for a few more weeks I think before it finishes up.

So what did I do???

I just had to go on the internet and start searching to see what I could find out. It wasn’t enough for me to wait and watch the show along with the rest of the viewers and find out what happens as each show plays.

Nope I had to find out!!!

So if you do not want to know how season 2 ended … don’t look any further… Read the rest of this entry »

George Michael in Athens … live show glimpses

Posted by evdomada on August 1, 2007

George Michael appeared in Athens for the first time last week and it’s where he wrapped up his European tour.  Unfortunately for us in Oz it’s still not clear whether he will be visiting us so that we too can experience him live.

Out of curiosity I went to YouTube today and searched for any clips of his concert in Athens.  To my surprise – not sure why I was surprised actually – there were a number of clips available to watch.

So for those GM fans, especially those that can ignore the crowd singers – a few very bad ones – I have selected two clips from Athens to share with you.

They actually are quite long in duration and seem to be a “highlights” package of the whole concert.  Someone has taken some time and effort to put this together.  Audio and visual aren’t the greatest but hey it’s the best way to get a glimpse of the event and what more could we expect from a devoted fan who probably wanted to watch the event as well as record it??

Listen out for his “Athina” cry … it stirs the crowd up and I think it’s the only time I have heard “Georgaki” speak Greek.

Enjoy!
