Being Human by Dr Aniello Iannuzzi

Posted by evdomada on October 26, 2007

I have been recommended a book as a must read, by a friend of mine titled Being Human.  The book was written by Dr Aniello Iannuzzi.

being-human.jpg
This is the summary that was given for Being Human:

Many today have lost their balance and happiness by artificial distraction and scorn for tradition. This book will show you by daily lessons, a thought to put in your lunchbox at the busiest job, how to get the balance back in your life. It is a recipe book for life.

In here you will find no passwords, no secrets, no cosmic healers and no TV evangelists.

The prescription: take daily until contented. The answers are obvious! We just need to open our eyes.

This is an ideal book for daily reflection, to stimulate conversations and to teach children and young adults about values. An ideal gift for those who like to think about the world and the meaning of life.

What reviewers have said about Being Human:

Those of us with our eyes fixed on outer space in search of answers find it easy to forget that the inner space of the human mind is by far the richer and more complex part of the Universe. In this refreshing and provocative book, Dr. Aniello Iannuzzi explores the essential ingredients of what it is to be human, juxtaposing his own words with those of some of the greatest thinkers of history. Whether you believe the human spirit is merely a product of evolution and biochemistry, or that there is something more at work, you will find much to inspire you in this thoughtful celebration of humanity.
Prof. Fred Watson – Astronomer and Science Writer

A book with great heart.
Maggie Hamilton – Writer, teacher, publisher

Being Human is a book for our times -   one to savour every day to remind
ourselves about the true meaning of life and the important things that shape our being. Dr Iannuzzi has produced an important book of relevance to everyone on planet Earth.

Posted by evdomada on October 25, 2007

Sydney University has arranged a series of events focusing on the restoration project currently being undertaken on the Parthenon on Athens’ Acropolis.  The restoration project also includes the construction of the new Acropolis Museum which will house the Parthenon Marbles.

Of course most Greeks, philhellenes and lovers of Hellenistic culture are hopeful that the Parthenon Marbles housed in the British Museum will also make their way to the new Acropolis Museum.

The Parthenon: Who owns Cultural Heritage?

As part of the Parthenon Project hosted by The University of Sydney, a panel of Greek and Australian experts will use the example of the Parthenon marbles to raise the broader issues of who owns cultural heritage. They will address many questions including: what if the marbles had been taken 1,000 years ago rather than 250 years ago? What if they were made by artisans from for example the south of Italy – who would claim ownership of them then? And what are the moral, ethical, historical, social and political issues that resonate through all cutural heritage that has been removed from its place of origin?

See Sydney Ideas for more information.

When: Sunday, 28 October 2007, 4.00pm
Venue: Seymour Theatre Centre
Cost: $20/$15 concession
Bookings: 02 9351 7940

Cool Calm and Collected … Ellas victorious in Turkey

Posted by evdomada on October 19, 2007

The “piratiko” sailed again into a foreign harbour and took the spoils.  Once again it raised its sails and looked like a team capable of repeating its Euro 2004 triumph.

Ellas managed to take 3 valuable points back from Turkey after we had lost our 3 points to them in Karaiskaki on 24th March.

Cool, calm and collected indeed!

Rehagel put out a team with a purpose, with clear directions and they looked like they stuck to their plan.  On this outing we looked nothing like the team that was disorganised and rattled by the Turks on the eve of our National Day.  Apart from a handful of defensive lapses the team carried out its duties with pride.

If you look at the lineup closely its very clear that Rehagel has built a team that can rival the defensive masters of the Italians.

Halkias, Kyrgiakos, Dellas, Seitaridis, Antzas and Torosidis let nothing get in their way from the Turks.  Not only were they defensively hard to break but both Seitaridis and Torosidis also managed to taunt the Turkish defence.  In the first half Torosidis was surprised to have beaten the offside trap and stalled for a second before forcing the Turkish keeper to make a crucial save.

Apart from the defenders that I mention, Ellas had a midfield and attack always ready to counter and threaten the Turkish penalty box.  Basinas, Amanatidis and Karagounis were unrelenting in creating runs and passes to the forwards Charisteas and Gekkas throughout the first half.

Rehagel made 2 changes in the second half both in the attacking areas of the team as the defence was doing a great job.  Gekkas and Charisteas were replaced by Samaras and Limperopoulos and the changes brought a fresh wave of attacks upon the Turks.

In fact it was an insightful pass from Samaras to Amanatidis that opened up the Turkish defence and allowed Amanatidis to cooly and deftly take the lead.

I believe that all Ellas fans can be proud of their national team’s performance.

Elections 2007: Libs campaign starts impressively

Posted by evdomada on October 17, 2007

John Howard has finally called an election and set the date on the weekend. It’s on Saturday 24th November and the campaigning has started in earnest by both sides.

The Liberal Party has started the campaign with a lot of optimistic hype.

First a referendum is being promised 18 months into their term if the Liberals are voted in. The referendum will be an opportunity for all of us Australians to recognise our Aborigines as the first original settlers of our land. It’s John Howard’s attempt at a “new” reconciliation but there is no apology that comes along with the referendum … no sorry.

Next was the $34 or so billion dollars being thrown into the tax cuts budget. The major headline of one paper was how the top tax rate will only be 40%. Great sweetener from any ones perspective and hard for any Labor supporter to not see its benefit.

Today, in his first Sydney Morning Herald interview since the campaign commenced, John Howard states “The good times need not end”. Obviously an optimistic and hopeful message from our PM who wants us to know that we can still have the good times we are enjoying today.

I’m not sure how others are taking the ’07 election campaign so far , but in my opinion the Labor Party has seemed to have taken a step back so far. Maybe they are taking in the Liberal’s first moves and planning their offensive in the next few days to come.

Many of us would like to see a strong campaign from both parties so that we can feel that there is some contest being fought.

And for those that think the polls have already given us a winner, think again and look back at the campaign between Keating and Hewson. The polls had Hewson poised for a landslide victory and Keating managed to turn it around in a shorter timeframe than that of Howard.

I am sure there is more to come in this campaign.

Greek music news – 15th October

Posted by evdomada on October 16, 2007

Despina Vandi has a new song to celebrate the 10 year Foivos-Vandi partnership titled “Thelo”. You can hear it on Despina’s MySpace website. Yes she has a MySpace account …

Also Nino is releasing his new album soon with songs written by Gonidis, and one by himself.  He will be releasing his new album “Thaumata” and I’ve been told that it’s his first release since his incident in Thessaloniki so it should be good!  The album will be exclusively played from 15th October through to 22nd October on the Thessaloniki radio station Ellinikos 92.8FM.  Click on the link and it should help you listen in to the radio station and hopefully you will get a chance to catch a few of the new tracks.

Elli Kokkinou has left the recording company Heaven Music and so ending her partnership with Foivos. Her first CD on the new label Sony BMG is titled Eilikrina and you can also hear her songs from the new release on her Elli MySpace website.  Some Elli fans are disappointed she ended her Foivos partnership but I think it’s a nice change from her arabesque sounding songs of late.

Bollywood Indian Film Festival 2007 Sydney

Posted by evdomada on October 16, 2007

For those that just love watching movies here’s another film festival that you can participate in.  Bollywood films are well known for their classic love stories, music, colours and how long they go on for.  I have to admit that I am definitely a fan.

Although the storylines can be quite cliched, some of their films have a charm to them that you will not find in western films.

The Bollywood festival is on between 17th and 28th October and screenings are at the Hoyts Paris Cinema  at the EQ – formerly known as Fox Studios.

Click here for more information on the movies and the session times.

Greek Film Festival 2007

Posted by evdomada on October 16, 2007

It’s back again!!!

Every year at around the same time, we all have a chance to watch the latest films from Greece that make us feel closer to “home” again.  We escape the usual films that are churned out by the Hollywood machine and have an opportunity to experience what Greek film makers have to offer.

As always there are too many new films to choose from and I wish I was able to watch every single one.  I did try that once at the Greek Film Festival a few years ago and I thoroughly enjoyed it but I am not sure if I could do it again.

I personally prefer the comedies but I also enjoy films that attempt to depict the real issues being faced by those living day-to-day in Greece and not just a summer holiday.  For those that managed to see Hardcore at the festival 2 or 3 years ago, you will know exactly what I mean.

These are the films that I will be trying to see at this year’s festival – selected based on personal taste and also the director’s reputation:

  • Extended Play
  • Bees in August
  • A Hero in Rome
  • Pandora
  • Pink
  • Straight Story

For the Sakis Rouvas fans his debut film Alter Ego will also be featured at this year’s festival.  He plays the rock star (surprised??) and the story tries to tell us how hard it is to be popular … not something that I will be running to see in a hurry.  But I know Sakis is very popular with the girls … and some boys … and I am sure it will have some popularity.

There is also a chance to revisit classics from past Greek silver screen glory days, in particular the classics Stella with Melina Merkouri and Kokkina Fanaria with Tzeni Karezi.

This year there are 2 venues screening the festival features.  The usual venue The Palace at Norton Street Leichhardt and the new venue The Chauvel at Paddington.

Visit the official website for all the information you need to plan your Greek movie adventure.  You can also book tickets online in advance.

Euro 2008 Qualifiers: Turkey vs Ellas

Posted by evdomada on October 15, 2007

Ellas managed to defeat Bosnia and keep a nice buffer at the top of the table in their group for the Euro 2008 qualification phase.

The next game is against Turkey in Constantinople and it’s a chance to (hopefully) redeem ourselves after the lesson Turkey gave to us in Piraeus.  Personally I would be happy to come out of Turkey with a draw and the valuable 1 point.  I know some would say that Turkey only managed a draw with Malta on the weekend but the game against Ellas will be more emotionally charged.  Turkey also was very successful in Greece at exposing the Greek defence and who is to say that they won’t be able to repeat it in their home ground.

For those wondering where to watch the game (Sydneysiders that is) I have been informed by my good friend Arthur that the following places will be showing the game live:

Greek Community Club
206 -210 Lakemba Street, Lakemba
Tel: 02 9759 4014
www.goc.com.au

Mythos Taverna
63 Norton Street, Leichhardt
Tel: 02 9560 5869
www.mythos.com.au

Enmore Theatre
130 Enmore Road, Newtown
Tel: 02 9519 9231
www.enmoretheatre.com.au/about-the-enmore

If you do not want to venture out of the house at 3:30am there is an online option.  Uefa.com offer a live streaming option for 4.99 Euro.  I used it for the Ellas v Bosnia game on Sunday morning and the stream was quite decent.

Finally, there was some confusion that SBS was going to show the game.  They are but NOT LIVE.  It will be their main feature on next Sunday’s show.  If this does change over the next day or so I will be informing you immediately!  You can also visit their website www.theworldgame.com.au to watch out if they announce something.
