Elections 2007: Libs campaign starts impressively

Posted by evdomada on October 17, 2007

John Howard has finally called an election and set the date on the weekend. It’s on Saturday 24th November and the campaigning has started in earnest by both sides.

The Liberal Party has started the campaign with a lot of optimistic hype.

First a referendum is being promised 18 months into their term if the Liberals are voted in. The referendum will be an opportunity for all of us Australians to recognise our Aborigines as the first original settlers of our land. It’s John Howard’s attempt at a “new” reconciliation but there is no apology that comes along with the referendum … no sorry.

Next was the $34 or so billion dollars being thrown into the tax cuts budget. The major headline of one paper was how the top tax rate will only be 40%. Great sweetener from any ones perspective and hard for any Labor supporter to not see its benefit.

Today, in his first Sydney Morning Herald interview since the campaign commenced, John Howard states “The good times need not end”. Obviously an optimistic and hopeful message from our PM who wants us to know that we can still have the good times we are enjoying today.

I’m not sure how others are taking the ’07 election campaign so far , but in my opinion the Labor Party has seemed to have taken a step back so far. Maybe they are taking in the Liberal’s first moves and planning their offensive in the next few days to come.

Many of us would like to see a strong campaign from both parties so that we can feel that there is some contest being fought.

And for those that think the polls have already given us a winner, think again and look back at the campaign between Keating and Hewson. The polls had Hewson poised for a landslide victory and Keating managed to turn it around in a shorter timeframe than that of Howard.

I am sure there is more to come in this campaign.
