Parthenon Project – Sydney University
Posted by evdomada on October 25, 2007
Sydney University has arranged a series of events focusing on the restoration project currently being undertaken on the Parthenon on Athens’ Acropolis. The restoration project also includes the construction of the new Acropolis Museum which will house the Parthenon Marbles.
Of course most Greeks, philhellenes and lovers of Hellenistic culture are hopeful that the Parthenon Marbles housed in the British Museum will also make their way to the new Acropolis Museum.

The Parthenon: Who owns Cultural Heritage?
As part of the Parthenon Project hosted by The University of Sydney, a panel of Greek and Australian experts will use the example of the Parthenon marbles to raise the broader issues of who owns cultural heritage. They will address many questions including: what if the marbles had been taken 1,000 years ago rather than 250 years ago? What if they were made by artisans from for example the south of Italy – who would claim ownership of them then? And what are the moral, ethical, historical, social and political issues that resonate through all cutural heritage that has been removed from its place of origin?
