Euro 2008 – Ellas and Finals Seedings

Posted by evdomada on November 22, 2007

Ellas defeated Hungary 1-2 in Budapest and qualified for Euro 2008 with the highest points tally (31 pts) of all teams in the qualification team. All 3 goals were quite scrappy, 2 own goals and a penalty that Gekas won and Basinas scored for Ellas to take the lead.

As European Champions and a good coefficient, Ellas has been placed in the top group of seedings for the draw.

Austria and Switzerland as hosts are in the top group along with the Netherlands.

Here is a table of the teams that qualified and their seedings.

England loss to Croatia

Posted by evdomada on November 22, 2007

England will not be travelling to Austria & Switzerland next summer for the Euro 2008 Championship.  Croatia proved a worthy opponent defeating England 2-3 away from home.

The loss has meant that Steve McLaren has been dismissed as the coach along with his assistan Terry Venables.  The search for a new coach has already commenced but it seems that they will not be rushing to any decision just as yet.

It’s the first time since USA 94 that the English will not be competing in a major football tournament.

A chance to rebuild, after a decade of moral erosion – SMH 22/11

Posted by evdomada on November 22, 2007

Paul Keating
November 22, 2007

The principal reason the public should take the opportunity to kill off the Howard Government has less to do with broken promises on interest rates or even its draconian Work Choices industrial laws, and everything to do with restoring a moral basis to our public life.

Without this, the nation has no standard to rely upon, no claim that can be believed, not even when the grave step of going to war is being considered. When truth is up for grabs, everything is up for grabs.

Cynicism and deceitfulness have been the defining characteristics of John Howard and his Government. They were even brazen enough to oversee the corruption of a United Nations welfare program. And when they were found out, not one of them accepted ministerial responsibility. Not Alexander Downer, not Mark Vaile and certainly not Howard. What they were doing was letting the cockies get their wheat sold through the AWB, while turning a blind eye to the AWB’s unscrupulous behaviour – illegally funding a regime Howard was arguing was so bad it had to be changed by force.

More…Howard took us into the disastrous Gulf War on the back of two lies. One, that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction, capable of threatening the Middle East and Western Europe; the other, that Howard was judiciously weighing whether to commit Australian forces against an evolving situation. We now know he had committed our forces to the Americans all along.

If the Prime Minister cannot be believed, who in the political system is to be believed?

When Opposition leader in 1995, Howard told us he would restore trust in government, when at that time trust in government was not in question. He also told us he would make us more “relaxed and comfortable”. Well, some relaxation and some comfort. These days, there are many parts of the world where Australians dare not go. Something new for all of us.

But bad as all this is, how much worse was it for Howard to begin the fracturing of his own community?

His tacit endorsement of Pauline Hanson’s racism during his first government, his WASP-divined jihad against refugees; those wretched individuals who had enough faith in us to try and reach us in old tubs, while his wicked detention policy was presided over by that other psalm singer, Philip Ruddock.

This is the John Howard the press gallery in Canberra went out of its way to sell to the public during 1995. The new-made person on immigration, not the old suburban, picket-fence racist of the 1980s, no, the enlightened unifier who now accepted Australia’s ethnic diversity; the Opposition leader who was going to maintain Keating Labor’s social policies on industrial relations, on superannuation at 15 per cent, on reconciliation, on native title, and on the unique labour market programs for the unemployed.

These solemn commitments by Howard, which helped him win the 1996 election, bit the dust under that breathtaking blanket of hypocrisy he labelled “non-core promises”.

Even on Medicare. And on that, contrary to his commitment, he forced each of us into private health or carry the consequences.

During the 1996 election campaign, a number of people I regard well said to me “Oh, I think Howard will be all right”; meaning, while not progressive, he would not be reactionary or socially divisive, or opportunistically amoral.

Well Howard wasn’t “all right”. He has turned out to be the most divisive prime minister in our history. Not simply a conservative maintaining the status quo, but a militant reactionary bent upon turning the clock back. Turning it back against social inclusion, cooperation at the workplace, the alignment of our foreign policies towards Asia, providing a truthful and honourable basis for our reconciliation, accepting the notion that all prime ministers since Menzies had: Holt, Gorton, McMahon, Whitlam, Fraser, Hawke and me: that our ethnic diversity had made us better and stronger and the nation’s leitmotif was tolerance. Howard has trodden those values into the ground.

He also trod on the reasonable constitutional progression to an Australian republic, even when the proposal I championed had everything about it that the Liberal Party could accept. A president appointed by both houses of Parliament; meaning by both major parties, while leaving the reserve powers with the new head of state as the Liberals had always wanted. The price of Howard conniving in its defeat probably means we will ultimately end up with an elected head of state, completely changing the representative nature of power and of the prime ministership and of the cabinet.

To compound Howard’s transgressions, he has run dead on the continuing obligation of structural economic change, just like he did as treasurer in the 1970s.

He and Costello have simply made hay while the sun has shone from the great structural reforms introduced by the Hawke and Keating governments. Those changes: open financial and product markets, the new decentralised wages system of 1993, were married up with a trillion dollars in superannuation savings, to underwrite the country’s prosperity and renew its economic base.

Howard’s sole example of reform is his GST. The one he told us in 1996 he would not give us. A regressive tax on all spending regardless of income.

Nations get a chance to change course every now and then. When things become errant, a wise country adjusts its direction. It understands that it is being granted an appointment with history. On this coming Saturday, this country should take that opportunity by driving a stake through the dark heart of Howard’s reactionary government.

Paul Keating was prime minister from 1991 to 1996, and treasurer from 1983 to 1991.

Elli Kokkinou – Eilikrina

Posted by evdomada on November 21, 2007

Elli Kokkinou has released her latest CD Eilikrina and if I am not mistaken it’s her first that is not a Foivos production.  Personally I actually think it’s her best so far.  It’s a change to the tsiftenteli intensive dance beats that Foivos had her performing in previous CDs.  We are also spared from the formula Foivos hasapika that he seems to have all his entourage singing lately.

Elli sings a few nice ballads but most of the release has a distinctive laiko feel to it and that’s the reason why I like it so much.  Elli gets to use her mellow voice to woo her fans with the expected romantic laika lyrics.

There a few low-points with the Eurovision pop style tracks eisai oti thelo and zo ti stigmi sou.  But personally apart from those tracks, the rest are great including my favorites stasou, gia fantasou, kapou kapou, pes mou ena psema and the title track lupame eilikrina.

Not a purchase that I have regretted so far 7/10.

Alkistis Protopsalti – Sto Oraiotero Simeio

Posted by evdomada on November 21, 2007

Alkistis Protopsalti has released her latest work Sto Oraiotero Simeio.  For those not familiar with Alkistis, she has always been  regarded one of the more serious contemporary Greek artists with a string of big hits such as Lava, Dithesio and more recently O Anthropos Mou.

Her new release has the usual sound that her fans expect.  There are no risks taken but it is a polished production.

It’s a laid back release with a mixture of ballads, laika, latin, dance and even a reggae beat track.  She also delivers a Greek rendition of Michael Jackson’s “they don’t care about us” titled s’ena kosmo pou den kanei kati gia mas.

As usual her voice is impeccable and it’s a great CD to listen to when you want to sit back and relax.

6.5/10

Euro 2008: Ellas plays last qualifiers

Posted by evdomada on November 21, 2007

Ellas has managed to secure the top stop in its group for the Euro 2008 tournament next year in Austria & Switzerland.  They easily defeated Malta 5-0 in Athens at Marousi’s OAKA or the Olympic Stadium as its also known.

Tomorrow morning (22/11 AEST) Ellas will play Hungary away in its last match of the qualifying phase with Rehagel wanting his team to finish its campaign on a high.  Otherwise the result will make no difference for Ellas finishing at the top of the group.

There are few records though that are to be made.  If Ellas finish up on a win and 31 points  then they will qualify with the highest tally of all qualifiers.  It will also be the highest score they would’ve have achieved in any other qualification.

It’s also Rehagel’s 75th match as the coach of the Hellenes, the highest ever for any coach of the national side.

The surprise of the group was Turkey’s away win in Oslo 1-2 and leap frogging the Norwegians for the second spot.  It provides us with an interesting finale as both teams need to win to ensure that they have a chance to earn the second ticket to Euro 2008.

Turkey will play Bosnia at home and a win will guarantee them the second spot.  If they lose or draw, then Norway will take second spot if they are able to defeat Malta away.

Here is a summary of the situation for all the Euro 2008 qualification groups.

Group A
———
Poland have secured first spot and Portugal will take second if they manage at least a draw against Finland.

Group B
———
Italy and France have qualified.

Group C
———
Greece have qualified – Norway and Turkey are battling for second spot.

Group D
———
Germany and the Czech Republic have qualified

Group E
———
Croatia have qualified but England need a win against the Croats to ensure that they qualify.  Otherwise if the Russians defeat the Andorrans away and England lose they will not make Euro 2008.

Group F
———
Spain are through but if Northern Ireland defeat the Spaniards, they have a chance to qualify if Sweden also lose to Latvia.

Group G
———
Romania and the Netherlands have qualified.

Of course as hosts, Austria and Switzerland have already qualified for the tournament.

Back to it …

Posted by evdomada on November 19, 2007

The evdomada.net team are back after fulfilling and completing their university obligations …

So apologies for the absence and hopefully the team will be back to it!

A few things have been happening in the world during our break …

Elections are on this weekend in Australia and the campaign is heating up to this Saturday’s poll. Some of us are interested in the result and we are curious as to how close all these polls that we are thrown at by the various newspapers, television shows, websites and the rest, will end up being to the actual outcome.

PASOK party members and “friends” voted Giorgos Papandreou back in as the party leader and by default the leader of the opposition in the Parliament of the Hellenes. Papandreou scored 55.57%, Venizelos second with 38.5% and Skandalidis a mere 5.76%. Whoever the leader though, it will be a tough job to get PASOK back in power against Nea Dimokratia. Karamanlis has defied his critics and has managed to unite the previously fragmented conservative party.

In entertainment news most fans have already snapped up a ticket to the Remos and Rouvas concert next April. Also Tsalikis and Lytra are coming to Melbourne only but I am sure a few fans will make their way down south for the show. Hopefully a few more Greek stars will visit down-under in 2008.

A few new albums have also been released; Nino, Elli Kokkinou and Alkistis Protopsalti to name a few. Notis Sfakianakis has a promo single floating about and Despina Vandi has released a CD to celebrate her 10 years with Phoivos.

Well, that’s enough for now and hopefully updates will be flowing more frequently.

Movember … support a good cause!!

Posted by evdomada on November 7, 2007

During Movember (the month formerly known as November) I’ll be growin a Mo. That’s right I’m bringing the Mo back because I’m passionate about changing men’s health and the fight against male depression and prostate cancer. Why…

  • Depression affects 1 in 6 men…Most don’t seek help. Untreated depression is a leading risk factor for suicide.
  • Last year in Australia 18,700 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer and more than 2,900 died of prostate cancer – equivalent to the number of women who die from breast cancer annually.
  • Men are far less healthy than women. The average life expectancy of males is 5 years less than females.

There’s a few ways to sponsor my Mo …

The easiest is to click on the blue Movember badge on the left hand side of this website.

Or you can go to http://www.movember.com/au/donate, enter my registration number which is 125546 and your credit card details.

Or you can sponsor me by cheque made payable to the “Movember Foundation” clearly marking the donation as being for my Registration Number: 125546. Please mail cheques to: PO Box 292, Prahran VIC 3181. All donations over $2 are tax deductible.

The money raised by Movember is donated to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and beyondblue – the national depression initiative, which will use the funds to create awareness, fund research and increase support networks for those men who suffer from prostate cancer and male depression.

For those that have supported Movember in previous years you can be very proud of the impact it has had and can check out the detail at: Fundraising Outcomes.

Movember culminates at the end of the month at the Gala Partés. These glamorous and groomed events will see Tom Selleck and Borat look-a-likes battle it out for their chance to take home the prestigious Man of Movember title. If you would like to be part of this great night you’ll need to purchase a Gala Parté ticket .
Thanks for your support

More info is available at www.movember.com.

Movember is proudly grown by Commonwealth Bank, Holden, Schick and VB.

Olympiakos fights for a draw with Real

Posted by evdomada on November 7, 2007

Olympiakos secured another Champions League point and kept their chances alive for progressing through to the next round of the Champions League.  Before they manage this they still have to defeat Lazio in their next meeting to have a chance to achieve this.

This morning’s game was a tough encounter for Olympiakos who were depleted from defenders during the game with Real Madrid.  The spaniards were definitely the team that created the most chances but Olympiakos fought hard and kept them at bay.  In fact the Piraeus Reds managed to create a few good chances of their own.

In other Champions League results this morning, Liverpool created a new record in the competition defeating the Turkish champions Besiktas 8-0 at Anfield.  Their performance was just too much for the Turkish team to contain the English onslaught.

This is great news for Olympiakos fans as we held the record previously from our 7-0 defeat in the Champions League against Juventus.  This year Arsenal equalled this feat when they defeated Slavia Prague 7-0 as well.
