“Eternals” derby ends in a draw: Olympiakos 1-1 Panathinaikos

Posted by evdomada on January 14, 2008

The second derby between the Superleague giants was played this morning at the Karaiskakis Stadium in Phaliron.  Their first encounter in this season ended 0-0 at Leoforos so both teams were eager for the points this time around to keep close with the league leaders AEK, who incidentally easily defeated Veroia 5-1 on Saturday night.

The game started explosively with both teams creating chances within the first 5 minutes of the game.

Panathinaikos scored first and had easily had created more trouble for Olympiakos in the first 15 minutes and were rewarded.  It’s unfortunate that although they did deserve to score, the goal in my opinion is dubious as the ball did cross the line as it was crossed to Ndoye who netted the goal.

Luckily for us gavrous, we were able to equalise at the end of the first half thanks to a Paraskeva Antzas goalmouth scramble.  This time the Panathinaikos players were screaming foul as they believed that Torosidis fouled the goalkeeper.  Being very biased, it looked like Torosidis stood his ground and the goalkeeper fell by himself.

There were no more goals to be seen in the second half but most reports described the game as a great advertisement for Greek football.

A penalty was rightfully awarded to Panathinaikos but Nikopolidis was able to stop Papadopoulos’ spot kick.

Asteroid has only 1-in-40 chance (2.5%) of hitting Mars

Posted by evdomada on January 10, 2008

By William Atkins
Thursday, 10 January 2008

The trajectory of asteroid 2007 WD5 as it nears Mars is being better estimated by astronomers here on Earth. As of January 8, 2008, it is expected to miss the Red Planet by about 18,641 miles (30,000 kilometers).

According to a Tuesday, January 8, 2008, news report (“Mars Impact Seems Less Likely”) by researchers at the NASA Near Earth Object (NEO) Program, the orbit of the asteroid has been more accurately predicted with the use of the 3.5-meter telescope at the Calar Alto Observatory in Spain.

The NEO Program is part of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

Astronomers studying the asteroid 2007 WD5 now state that it has only a 1-in-40 chance (2.5%) of impacting Mars on January 30, 2008. And, they say that future updates on the path of the asteroid should further reduce the chance of it hitting Mars.

This latest information is good for Mars, but bad for Earth astronomers who were hoping to study the collision of the asteroid onto the surface of Mars. They were hoping to learn more about what happens when asteroids and other space objects hit rocky planets like Mars and Earth.

Whatever happens, three spacecraft orbiting Mars and two rovers (Spirit and Opportunity) on the surface of the planet will be likely observing the asteroid as it passes very close to Mars.

Guess Who??

Posted by evdomada on January 9, 2008

I was sent this and just had to share it …

Job Needed 1/2009:

This person needs a job, seeks an executive position. He will be available in January 2009, and is willing to relocate.

RESUME – EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Law Enforcement:
“I was arrested in Kennebunkport, Maine, in 1976 for driving under the influence of alcohol. I pled guilty, paid a fine, and had my driver’s license suspended for 30 days. My Texas driving record has been ‘”Lost” and is not available.

Military:  I joined the Texas Air National Guard and went AWOL. I refused to take a drug test or answer any questions about my drug use. By joining the Texas Air National Guard, I was able to avoid combat duty in Vietnam.

College:  I graduated from Yale University with a low C average. I was a cheerleader.

PAST WORK EXPERIENCE:

I ran for U.S. Congress and lost. I began my career in oil business in Midland  Texas , in 1975. I bought an oil company, but couldn’t find any oil in Texas. The company went bankrupt shortly after I sold all my stock.

I bought the Texas Rangers baseball team in a sweetheart deal that took land using taxpayer money.

With the help of my father and our friends in the oil industry (including Enron CEO Ken Lay), I was elected governor of Texas.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS GOVERNOR OF TEXAS:

Changed Texas pollution laws to favor power and oil companies, making Texas the most polluted state in the Union. During my tenure, Houston replaced Los Angeles as the most smog-ridden city in America.

1. I cut taxes and bankrupted the Texas treasury to the tune of billions in borrowed money.

2. I set the record for the most executions by any governor in American history.

3. With the help of my brother, the governor of Florida , and my father’s appointments to the Supreme Court, I became President of the US, after losing by over 500,000 votes.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS PRESIDENT:

4. I am the first President in U.S. history to enter office with a criminal record.

5.  I invaded and occupied two countries at a continuing cost of over one billion dollars per week.

6. I spent the U.S. surplus and effectively bankrupted the U.S. Treasury.

7. I shattered the record for the largest annual deficit in U.S. history.

8. I set an economic record for most private bankruptcies filed in any 12-month period.

9. I set the all-time record for most foreclosures in a 12-month period.

10. I set the all-time record for the biggest drop in the history of the U.S. stock market. In my first year in office, over 2 million Americans lost their jobs and that trend continues.

11. I’m proud that the members of my cabinet are the richest of any administration in U.S. history. My “poorest millionaire,” Condoleezza Rice, has a Chevron oil tanker named after her.

12. I set the record for most campaign fund-raising trips by a U.S. President.

13. I am the all-time U.S. and world record -holder for receiving the most corporate campaign donations.

14. My largest lifetime campaign contributor, and one of my best friends, Kenneth Lay, presided over the largest corporate bankruptcy fraud in U.S. history, Enron.

15. My political party used Enron private jets and corporate attorneys to assure my success with the U.S. Supreme Court during my election decision.

16. I have protected my friends at Enron and Halliburton against investigation or prosecution. More time and money was spent investigating the Monica Lewinsky affair than has been spent investigating one of the biggest corporate rip-offs in history. I presided over the biggest energy crisis in U.S. history and refused to intervene when corruption involving the oil industry was revealed.

17. I presided over the highest gasoline prices in U.S. history.

18. I changed the U.S. policy to allow convicted criminals to be awarded government contracts.

19. I appointed more convicted criminals to my administration than any President in U.S. history.

20. I created the Ministry of Homeland Security, the Largest bureaucracy in the history of the United States Government.

21. I’ve broken more international treaties than any President in U.S. history.

22. I am the first President in U.S. history to have the United Nations remove the U.S. from the Human Rights Commission.

23. I withdrew the U.S. from the World Court of Law.

24. I refused to allow inspector’s access to U.S. “prisoners of war” detainees and thereby have refused to abide by the Geneva Convention.

25. I am the first President in history to refuse United Nations election inspectors (during the 2002 US election).

26. I set the record for fewest numbers of press conferences of any President since the advent of television.

27. I set the all-time record for most days on vacation in any one-year period. After taking off the entire month of August, I presided over the worst security failure in U.S. history.

28.  I garnered the most sympathy ever for the U.S. after the World Trade Center attacks and less than a year later made the U.S. the most hated country in the world, the largest failure of diplomacy in world history.

29. I have set the all-time record for most people worldwide to simultaneously protest me in public venues (15 million people), shattering the record for protests against any person in the history of mankind.

30. I am the first President in U.S. history to order an unprovoked, pre-emptive attack and the military occupation of a sovereign nation. I did so against the will of the United Nations, the majority of U.S. Citizens and the world community.

31. I have cut health care benefits for war veterans and support a cut in duty benefits for active duty troops and their families in wartime.

32. In my State of the Union Address, I lied about our reasons for attacking Iraq & then blamed the lies on our British friends.

33. I am the first President in history to have a majority of Europeans (71%) view my presidency as the biggest threat to world peace and security.

34. I am supporting development of a nuclear “Tactical Bunker Buster,” a WMD.

35. I have so far failed to fulfill my pledge to bring Osama Bin Laden to justice.

RECORDS AND REFERENCES:

All records of my tenure as governor of Texas are now in my father’s library, sealed & unavailable for public view.

All records of SEC investigations into my insider trading and my bankrupt companies are sealed in secrecy and unavailable for public view.

All records or minutes from meetings that I, or my Vice-President, attended regarding public energy policy are sealed in secrecy and unavailable for public review.  I specified that my sealed documents will not be available for 50 years.

Cricket: Australia vs India off the pitch … much ado about nothing?

Posted by evdomada on January 9, 2008

Cricket …

A game that has come under some scrutiny this week over controversial remarks, controversial behaviour and actions that have definitely made some people rethink the term used for the game “the gentleman’s game”.

It’s hard to make a clear decision as to who is at fault but one thing is for sure, that racial slurs should not be tolerated in any sport.  Other taunts, personal or not, should be tolerated on the field and really just kept on the field.  It’s something that just happens whether we like it or not, and those that have played sport at any level know what I mean.

In the game of cricket, the Australians have historically been renowned for their slurs or sledging on the cricket field; that should be no surprise to anyone that has followed the sport for years.  The fact that they are now the team to take this matter off the field is surprising.  Unless their calls for a racial slur are true then we maybe can understand why it was taken off the field.

Then there was the way that Australia won and celebrated their victory over the Indians at the SCG.  No matter what anyone says, it was not a display of a gracious victory.  There was no sign of the traditional handshake with the last of the pair of batsmen from the opposing side.  Instead an arrogance that is not becoming for any great sporting team.

Peter Roebuck from the Sydney Morning Herald, a seasoned cricket columnist, went as far as suggesting that Ricky Ponting be fired as the captain for allowing his team to behave in such a way.  I suggest you read the column in case you haven’t as yet … click here.

There have also been a few Australian sporting legends who also think that the attitude of the Australian cricket team could potentially damage Australia’s sporting reputation.  John Bertrand, Herb Elliott and Rob de Castella are noted as being amongst these sporting legends that are disappointed with the cricketers behaviour … click here to read article.

Geoff Lawson also made a comment that the victory was not “in the spirit of the game”.  Ron Barrasi is another to join in agreement.

One must wonder whether so many sporting personalities could be wrong?

Or is there really anything that is worth discussing about on this issue?

Either way the word is out and whether we agree or not there is a scent of bad sportsmanship in the air.  Whether it’s with the Australians and their behaviour, or the alleged racial slur by Harbhajan Singh or even the talk of the tour being cancelled over the whole management of the issue.

However the sentiments seem to be leaning more towards the Indians in the last 24 hours, with Steve Bucknor being replaced by the ICC for the Perth test and Harbhajan being allowed to bowl in the test at Perth until his appeal is heard.

Now Australian spin-bowler Brad Hogg will have to appear before the umpire for allegedly calling an Indian player a “bastard”.

How about the word karma? Isn’t that an Indian word?

Argentina midfielder Belluschi signs for Olympiakos

Posted by evdomada on January 9, 2008

By Barney Spender
ATHENS, Jan 8 (Reuters) – Greek champions Olympiakos Piraeus have signed Argentina international midfielder Fernando Belluschi on a four-and-a-half year contract, the club said on Tuesday.

No details of the fee to be paid to his previous club River Plate have been made public but reports in the Greek media said it could reach 6.5 million euros.

“I am very happy. I was really anxious for the negotiations to be completed,” Belluschi, 24, told reporters.
“Now I just want to get involved in training as soon as possible.”

Belluschi, who has two caps, is unlikely to feature in the derby against Panathinaikos at the weekend but should play a part in Olympiakos plans against Chelsea in the last 16 of the Champions League next month.

“It is a dream for every Argentine footballer to play in Europe,” he said. “I feel lucky and happy to be here and hope that I can reproduce the form I had in Argentina.”

Greek media have reported Olympiakos are negotiating with another Argentine, Sergio Almiron who joined Juventus for nine million euros in June but has only played three times.
