Euroleague: Olympiakos Last 40 Minutes

Posted by evdomada on April 9, 2008

Olympiakos is Greece’s last representative team in the Euroleague championship and they are 40 minutes away from either making it to the Final 4 in Madrid or saying farewell for another season.

They managed the surprise of the season by winning the first game in Moscow but were unable to secure their Final 4 spot in Piraeus, losing the second match. Now they need another miraculous performance in Moscow for the third and final match.

The match is being played this morning at 02:15 (Thursday 10/4) for those that have access to SKAI TV. Otherwise try and tune into Sport-FM radio or ERA Sport radio via the internet.

Final point, it’s disappointing that no sports television broadcaster in Australia, including ESPN, is showing ANY of the Euroleague matches – live or delayed!!! Unless it’s NBA basketball it seems that the Australians aren’t interested???

A New Useful Link: Greek Toys and Books

Posted by evdomada on April 7, 2008

Most of us that were at the Greek Festival celebrations at Darling Harbour the previous weekend would’ve seen the Greek Toys and Books stall. I personally enjoyed the stall and could not resist making a few purchases.

Coincidentally Tony who manages the Greek Toys and Books managed to get in touch with me a few days before the festival and we decided to try and spread the news!

No more needing to deal with international websites or international suppliers of Greek language books or toys for those wanting to buy these products for their children or nieces or any other family member.

Tony and his crew are very friendly and really want to help out.

You will also notice that I have posted the Media Release of the story when Marcos Baghdatis got involved with spreading the good news about Greek Toys and Books.

So welcome Greek Toys and Books to the evdomada site!

Greek Weightlifting Team: Investigation on Doping Scandal

Posted by evdomada on April 7, 2008

The doping scandal that hit Greece’s national weightlifting team after a surprise WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) checkup, in which eleven out of 14 members of the team were tested positive for banned substances, has assumed dramatic dimensions.

The Greece team is likely to be barred from the forthcoming European championship and the Beijing Olympic Games, as well. Greek weightlifting coach Christos Iakovou, who tendered in his resignation, was suspended.

In the meantime, Greece’s Sports Minister Giannis Ioannides demanded detailed figures on the recent tests the Greek weightlifters have undergone be released.

In two days’ time, a meeting will be held between Culture Minister Michael Liapis and the Federations of the Olympic Sports, including the Greek Olympic Committee. “We [Greece] are not interested in the number of medals we will win, as long as they are ’clean’,” Hellenic National Council of Combating Doping head Hara Spiliopoulou told NET radio.

The case should be thoroughly investigated, noted PASOK (Panhellenic Socialist Movement), while KKE (Greek Communist Party) stressed that the use of banned substances is a common secret. The majority of the people involved in sports are well aware of the doping problem, underlined SYN (Coalition of the Radical Left) head Alexis Tsipras. Finally, LAOS (Popular Orthodox Rally) President George Karatzaferis said that this was a coupe de grace to the reliability of the blood-thirsty professional sports.

Nutrition Supplements

3 out of 10 athletes are taking nutritional supplements on a regular basis. Half of those do not even know the name of the medical product or its side effects. According to research conducted during the first two months by Athens professors in a sample of 716 athletes around the country: 56% prefer products that contain proteins and amino acids, 35,6% carbohydrates and 29,7 electrolytes. 34% use them after their trainers’ suggestion, 23,4% consult their doctor, 15,5% consult their co athletes, 14,6% their nutritionist and 12,1% take them on their own. However, the usage of nutrition supplements may be dangerous as the substances of the product may not meet the superscription written on the box of the product. Researchers say that only with hard training an athlete can succeed without putting his health in danger with products of doubtful quality.

Posted by evdomada on April 7, 2008

Date: 21 January 2008

Cypriot tennis ace, Marcos Baghdatis has thrown his racket behind an off-field initiative to help maintain the Greek language in Australia.

Adelaide based, Tony Kyriacou (of Greek Cypriot background) established Greek Toys and Books – an online website www.greektoysandbooks.com in 2006 in order to provide access to fun and educational Greek language products to Australia’s large Greek community.

Mr Kyriacou identified and approached Marcos Baghdatis as the perfect ambassador to support language maintenance amongst Australia’s Greek community and was thrilled with his response.

“I would like to congratulate Tony Kyriacou on his drive and passion to help support the Greek language in Australia” said Marcos Baghdatis. “As I have lived outside of my home country for much of my life, I can strongly relate and respect the Hellenic diaspora” said Mr Baghdatis.

“I always get fantastic support here in Australia and I believe it is great to help maintain the Greek language and culture so that future sports stars from Cyprus and Greece continue to receive strong support in future generations” said Mr Baghdatis.

In addition to importing Greek talking toys and a wide range of books ranging from Greek Disney books to Greek Mr Men books, Greek Toys and Books are currently producing a range of bilingual learning aids including a locally produced animated Greek DVD, scheduled for release in mid 2008.

“Marcos Baghdatis’ support for our initiative reinforces our belief that we are filling an important role in the community. We are continuing to grow Greek Toys and Books and we now have over 250 different products available on www.greektoysandbooks.com” said Mr Kyriacou. “We are looking forward to releasing our locally made bilingual products later this year which we plan to also export to North America and the United Kingdom” says Mr Kyriacou.

Name Issue: Intense Deliberations

Posted by evdomada on April 7, 2008

After the Greek veto in Bucharest Athens states that it is ready for a new round of deliberations with Skopje in the framework of EU. The Prime Minister Mr. Kostas Karamanlis will brief the President of Republic on the outcome of Bucharest and for the new movements of the Greek diplomacy.

Greece does not crow over. On the contrary, it addresses the neighboring country and is asking for a new round of talks in order to resolve the issue, Greek FM Dora Bakoyiannis states in her interview in Eleftheros Typos newspaper and adds that after the finding of a mutually accepted solution Skopje will enter NATO having Greece’s full support. In addition, Mrs. Bakoyiannis estimates that the two countries will go through a phase of tension, making clear that she respects people’s feelings.

Talking to ANT 1 radio station, she expressed her country’s will for an immediate re start of discussions on the name issue.

Diplomatic war on Skopje has not been decided yet PASOK president Mr. Giorogos Papandreou said in his interview in Kathimerini tis Kyriakis newspaper pronouncing at the same time his party’s participation in the handling of the problem.

General Secretary of ND Civil Planning Mr. Nikos Karachalios, speaking to NET 105,8 radio station stressed that EU and US are moving towards the wrong direction noting that decisions have been already taken. In parallel, he branded the name issue a big problem for the wider area and Greece. He said that our country will express its position with collectedness.

Our neighboring country is trying to preserve its balance between intransigence and collectedness. After its meeting with George Bush in Croatia, Skopje leadership announced that next week intense deliberations will start targeting at the finding of an appropriate solution as soon as possible.

FYROM Leadership Starts Deliberations on Name Issue

FYROM leadership will start next week deliberations for the finding of an appropriate solution in the name issue as soon as possible Skopje President Branko Crvenkovski said after the meeting he had in Zagreb with US president Mr. George Bush. Mr. Bush attended yesterday a working lunch in the Croatian capital with the 3 countries (Croatia, Albania and FYROM) that signed the “Adriatic Charter” having the support of US. Mr. Crvenkovski and Cruevski reported that US remain an important supporter of FYROM’s entrance in NATO and added that they have briefed Mr. Bush and US FM Condoleezza Rice on the issue.

As Mr. Crvenkovski said he will take the initiative and will invite the leaders of the biggest FYROM political parties to meet in the following week. He agreed that there is the necessity for immediate talks in order for decisions to be taken. “Certainly Macedonia has the power and will to succeed. Some times only time is important. The next days are not appropriate for a decision to be taken. We must calm down the feeling and the shock we went through in Bucharest first” he said. He also stressed that feelings must not prevail and must not be followed by rush decisions which will put in danger FYROM’s Euro Atlantic prospective.

Superleague: Rivaldo’s Revenge and Panathinaikos’ Penalty Reprieve

Posted by evdomada on April 1, 2008

AEK with Rivaldo as its maestro took Olympiakos to the cleaners and defeated them very easily 4-0. As an Olympiakos fan, there isn’t much that I can say other than congratulations to the better team on the day. AEK are now only 2 points behind Olympiakos and are Superleague title contenders once again.

Panathinaikos were awarded 2 penalties against Panionios and managed a 2-1 result. This puts them only 1 point behind Olympiakos and also look good for challenging the Superleague title as they definitely have an easier run of games to the finish of the competition.

The results definitely have set up an interesting last 3 rounds of the Superleague.
