Eurovision 2008: Greece in the Finals!

Posted by evdomada on May 21, 2008

By Betty Savourdou
Translated by Sofia Gartziou

Kalomoira’s “Secret Combination” made it to the finals and “unlocked” the door for Greece! With a stunning presentation, on Tuesday night, the Greek entry raised enthusiasm and won the ticket for the finals taking place next Saturday. Other countries that made it to the finals are: Romania, Bosnia & Herz, Finland, Russia, Israel, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Poland and Norway.

Explosive Performance

The first semi finals of Eurovision 2008 were completed successfully on Tuesday night with the record-number of 43 participant countries.

20 cameras covered the event under the observance of Sven Stoyianovich who had also directed Eurovision 2005 in Kiev.

The show opened with the angelic voices of a children’s choir and musicians dressed up in white played sounds from Balkans. Dancers with the national colors of Serbia danced on stage while on the background, big colorful flowers appeared.

And then the hosts of the night Jovana Janković and Željko Joksimović, came on stage wearing official cloths. It must be noted that Betty and Mathilde Maggira were the commentators for Greece.

Finally all participants came on stage:

1. Montenegro: Stefan Filipović – “Zauvijek Volim Te”
2. Israel: Boaz – “The Fire In Your Eyes”
3. Estonia: Kreisiraadio – “Leto Svet”
4. Moldova: Geta Burlacu – “A Century Of Love”
5. San Marino: Miodio – “Complice”
6. Belgium: Ishtar – “O Julissi”
7. Azerbaijan: Elnur & Samir – “Day After Day”
8. Slovenia: Rebeka Dremelj – “Vrag Naj Vzame”
9. Νorway: Maria – “Hold On Be Strong
10. Poland: Isis Gee – “For Life¨¨
11. Ireland: Dustin the Turkey – “Irelande Douze Pointe”
12. Andorra: Gisela – “Casanova”
13. Boznia & Herz.: Laka – “Pokušaj”
14. Armenia: Sirusho – “Qele, Qele”
15. Netherlands: Hind – “Your Heart Belongs To Me”
16. Finland: Teräsbetoni – “Missä Miehet Ratsastaa”
17. Romania: Nico & Vlad – “Pe-o Margine De Lume”
18. Russia: Dima Bilan – “Believe”
19. Greece: Kalomoira – “Secret Combination”

The Greek entry was totally explosive!

Kalomoira performed cheerfully Secret Combination- accompanied phonetically by Victoria Halkiti and Nektarios Georgiadis. Kalomoira and her dancers won the impressions as they danced impeccably the compound choreography of the song!

The scenery was amazing; a giant book-heart opened in the middle of the stage and Kalmoira came out of it, stunning as ever!

Her fuchsia dress was a special order by JLo: Jennifer Lopez Fashion House.

As it is already known, Ilias Ledakis was responsible for the stage scenery, Juliano for the choreography and Costas Kapetanidis for the technical organization of the Greek entry.

Time for Voting

After the presentation of the songs, the presenters gave the signal for the voting procedure to start. Viewers from 19 countries -Germany and Spain too- voted their favorite song except of course of their national entry by televoting .

The 10 countries that won the tickets for the finals were announced randomly as the televoting results will be announced next Saturday.

The two semi finals and the finals of Eurovision Song Contest Belgrade 2008 will be broadcasted by NET as well as by the Second Programme 103,7 FM and 1386 AM.

Eurovision 2008 … Bigger and Better

Posted by evdomada on May 21, 2008

Eurovision is back for another year and as the cliche goes, this year will be bigger than ever. Well it literally will be bigger than ever as 43 countries are competing this year in 2 semi-finals with only 25 performing on the Finals night.

The first semi-final was on last night in Belgrade (or early this morning for those of us in Australia) and the second semi final on Thursday night (22/5). The Final will then be on Saturday 24/5

10 countries will progress from each of the semi-finals and they will be joined with the automatic qualifiers Serbia as they are the hosts and the traditional Top 4 entrants who get an automatic entry to the final; UK, France, Germany and Spain.

Kalomira and her Secret Combination competed in the first semi-final. We can only hope that she continues the form of our recent entrants and performs well in the Final.

Julia Zemiro will be our host on SBS who will air the first semi-final this Friday night at 7:30pm (AEST), the second semi-final on Saturday night at 7:30pm (AEST). The final will be shown on SBS as well on Sunday night at 7:30pm (AEST).

As all of these shows are delayed broadcasts try to avoid reading the internet news or news reports from Europe if you want to maintain an element of surprise!!

07/08 UEFA Champions League Final

Posted by evdomada on May 20, 2008

It’s on again this Thursday morning and unfortunately its an all EPL final: Manchester United versus Chelsea. Personally it’s a let down to see 2 teams from the same domestic competition to meet in the final. Not sure if I speak for many football lovers but I would prefer to see a match between clubs from different competitions.

In any case, the two finalists have proven themselves the best teams to get to the final. It was a long and tiring road to get to Moscow for both Man United and Chelsea and we truly do hope that we see a great game.

Based on form and previous experience, I think that Manchester United should prove a difficult task for Chelsea and will take the title once again. Chelsea’s midfielder stars will need to lift and take control of the middle if they want to “choke” Ronaldo of any goal scoring opportunities. A lot rests on Drogba’s shoulders for Chelsea whereas Manchester has many more options to find the net.

For Australian east coast viewers the coverage commences on SBS at 4am this Thursday morning 22nd May.

Moscow local kick-off time is 20:45 in case you want to work out your locations local time for the match kick off.

Greek Theatre: Μπαμπάδες με Ρούμι … update

Posted by evdomada on May 19, 2008

We had an opportunity on last Saturday’s Evdomada Einai Kai Kylaei show to interview one of the actors from the theatre troupe touring Sydney later this month that will be staging Μπαμπάδες με Ρούμι.

So what more did we find out from the interview???

Well Μπαμπάδες are a dessert … a cake! And they can be filled with various liqueurs such as ρούμι or rum, or brandy or whatever other liqueur. That’s something I didn’t know!

But there is also a play on the word Μπαμπάδες in that there are fathers out there seen for what they have to offer to their children in monetary terms. The main premise of the play is the passing of a father, the gathering of the family for the will, a winning lottery ticket … and the Bulgarian lady that the father had married recently.

We are told that there are many laughs and we will not be disappointed.

The play has been a major success in Greece and also translated in other languages and played in other parts of Europe. The Melbourne performances were a major success, Sydney is their next stop and there are plans to take it to Hobart next.

2MM: Evdomada Einai kai Kylaei … Changes

Posted by evdomada on May 19, 2008

Evdomada Einai Kai Kylaei is approaching its 10th year anniversary this October …

In its almost 10 year existence, we had pretty much kept the same theme and same format very Saturday morning.

We have had a major change in our team with the decision of one of our founding fathers to move overseas. His decision meant that I was left alone on the Saturday morning shift and seriously wondering what the future held for the longest running show on 2MM … I was reminiscing our halcyon days, the duet that delivered a quality show every week.

Will it ever happen again???

I then get a call from Paul Theodorakopoulos, a previous announcer at 2MM and current Kosmos journalist. He suggested that he joined the Evdomada team and bring some of his ideas to the show.

Sounded like a good idea …

Then 3 weeks into the new partnership, Christina Bouzios joined us. Christina is currently studying a journalism degree at Sydney University and so brings with her a fresh approach to the show. Christina delivers her “Christina’s Corner” on the show, delivered predominantly in English and my attempts to translate for our older listeners … so that they don’t feel left out!

So … I welcome Paul and Christina to the Evdomada team and lets hope we enjoy a long and happy partnership.

Greek Superleague: Playoffs and Greek Cup … A Final Wrap Up

Posted by evdomada on May 19, 2008

Olympiakos defeated Aris 2-0 on Saturday evening in the Greek Cup. The game was played in the northern Greek capital Thessaloniki which could have been seen as an advantage for Aris but Olympiakos were too dominant and too powerful.

Olympiakos scored in the 33rd minute when Kovacevic netted an impressive header from a perfectly delivered cross from the Argentinian man of the match Galeti. A similar situation was given to Olympiakos in the 53rd minute when another well-delivered cross from Galeti was met with a powerful header by Zevlakov that ended up in the back of the net.

It was another impressive performance from the Superleague champions and definitely the strongest team in the competition this season. Read the rest of this entry »

Greek Theatre Sydney: Μπαμπάδες με Ρούμι

Posted by evdomada on May 11, 2008

A comedy theatre troupe from Melbourne is touring in Sydney late this May. They are presenting the play “Μπαμπάδες με Ρούμι”. Mpampades are a sweet that can be filled with various liquers such as rum.  But in our interview with one of the actors of the play informed us, the name also infers to those that see their fathers for their monetary value … what does my father have to offer to me?

The play has been around for over 10 years with many successes in Greece, Cyprus and other European cities.  It apparently has also been translated into French (from memory) with great success in Belgium.

It was written by T. Papathanasiou & M Reppas and is being directed locally by M. Tsaldaris.

We were informed that it was a major success in Melbourne and they have decided to come up to Sydney and bring the laughs to us as well.

There are only 3 sessions planned and they will be on Friday 30th, Saturday 31st May and Sunday 1st June.

The Friday and Saturday sessions are at 8pm and Sunday at 3pm.

Tickets are $25 or $20 for concession.

It will be played at the Mantourideio Theatre at 142 Addison Road Marrickville – Click on the address for a map.
