A cinematic retrospective from 1956 to 2007, exploring immigration issues both within and outside Greek borders, from France, Germany, to America and Australia and then back to the heartland…

If cinema is the art of telling a story through moving pictures then language is truly irrelevant in this perennial journey through hearts and lands, as told in this collection of black& white gems, documentaries and contemporary features.

Justice For Cyprus March in Sydney – 27th July 2008

Posted by evdomada on July 24, 2008

S.E.K.A the Justice for Cyprus Committee has once again organised the memorial event of the Turkish invasion and occupation of Cyprus in 1974.

Last Saturday morning we interviewed Mr Christodoulou the President of the Cyprus Community of Sydney on our radio show.  He made a public admission that the permission to march in the city of Sydney is at risk due to the decreasing number of participants at this memorial event.

He pleaded with the Greek community to make their presence felt this Sunday and to march together so that our government never forgets the plight of the Cypriots that lost their lives, their houses, their homeland.  In particular he wants to see more of the younger generation to make their presence at the event.

As Greeks living abroad, these are the events that we can help and make a contribution to the causes closest to our Hellenism.  The Macedonian name issue, the occupation of Cyprus and the Pontian genocide are 3 of our most important issues that we cannot let up on.

Hopefully we can make an effort to participate.

This is the program for this Sunday 27th July 2008:

10am Memorial Service in memory of the fallen and prayer for the missing persons at the Cathedral of The Annunciation of Our Lady, of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, 242 Cleveland St, Redfern

1:30pm Wreath laying ceremony at the Cenotaph, Martin Place, Sydney

2:15pm Public march via George Street ending at Sydney Town Hall

3:30pm Anti-Occupation gathering with speeches and artistic program at the Cyprus Community Club, 58-76 Stanmore Road, Stanmore

Present at the events will be Mr Andros Kyprianou, Member of the Cyprus Parliament.

Free buses will be available from the Cyprus Community Club to Martin Place.  Buses will be leaving between 12pm and 12:45pm from Stanmore to Martin Place.

Return buses will be available for the return trip from Cnr George & Bathurst Streets to Stanmore.

Any organisation wishing to participate in the wreath laying ceremony at the Martin Place Cenotaph can contact the Cyprus Community Club on 9557 1256.

Nea Dimokrotia Firm on Issue of Party Funding

Posted by evdomada on July 9, 2008

The government intends to press ahead with its plans to set up a parliamentary committee to examine rules on party funding, despite indications that PASOK and other opposition parties will not take part.

Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis proposed on Monday that a committee of deputies should look at whether the law on donations to political parties could be made tougher.

Government spokesman Theo-doros Roussopoulos said that the lack of support for the initiative from PASOK and the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) showed that the opposition parties were not serious about tackling corruption.

“They talk about real transparency but they do not pursue it in practice,” he said. “If the opposition is truly interested in strengthening institutional measures then it should participate.”

Roussopoulos said that New Democracy would go ahead and form working groups to examine the issue even if PASOK and SYRIZA refuse to agree to the formation of a committee.

PASOK leader George Papandreou held a meeting yesterday with senior party officials to decide what steps the Socialists should take next as they sense an opportunity to chip away at the government’s popularity, which has been dented following allegations linking Culture Minister Michalis Liapis to the Siemens scandal.

A number of conservative MPs have privately expressed reservations about Liapis’s actions and sources said yesterday that the one ND deputy who spoke out publicly, Petros Tatoulis, could be ejected from the party.

If this were to happen, the ruling conservatives would reinstate Costas Koukodimos, who is currently in self-imposed exile as an independent MP.

Drive for an Enhanced Taxicab Experience

Posted by evdomada on July 9, 2008

All taxi drivers will be obliged to have air conditioning in their cabs and price lists in English and Greek by this fall, according to changes announced yesterday by Transport Minister Costis Hatzidakis, who also heralded a scheme that will allow taxis to be ordered by cell phone text message.

The cabbies will not be allowed to charge extra for offering vehicles with air conditioning, Hatzidakis said.

As for the text message initiative, it will come into effect by the end of the year, the minister said.

Hatzidakis also heralded the creation of a four-digit phone line, due to be operational by year end, that passengers will be able to call to report poor service.

Also new taxi ranks will be set up at key spots – near hospitals and metro stations – to faciliate commuters.

Romania Urged to Drop ‘Happy News’ Law

Posted by evdomada on July 9, 2008

VIENNA (Reuters)

Europe’s leading human rights watchdog, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), urged Romania’s president yesterday to veto draft legislation that would require radio and television stations to air more “happy” news. Under a bill which still needs the approval of President Traian Basescu, broadcasters will have to give equal time to “positive” and “negative” issues in their newscasts. The bill’s sponsors say too much gloomy news is making people ill. “Prescribing, or even defining good versus bad news, is a severe political intrusion into editorial freedom,” said Miklos Haraszti, media freedoms monitor for the 56-nation OSCE.

Cyprus – No Plan B for Reunification

Posted by evdomada on July 9, 2008

NICOSIA (AP) – Cyprus’s Greek-Cypriot president said yesterday there is “no alternative” to full-fledged negotiations to reunify the ethnically divided island.

Dimitris Christofias said he has no plan B other than starting face-to-face reunification talks with Turkish-Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat.

“The goal is that negotiations finally take place,” Christofias told a news conference. “There is no alternative proposal from us at least, and I want to believe, as Mr Talat has assured me, there is no alternative proposal on his part.” Reunification talks had been deadlocked since 2004, when Greek Cypriots rejected and Turkish Cypriots approved a UN reunification blueprint.

But Christofias said he would not accept deadlines to be imposed on the negotiations. Any attempt to restrict the talks to a time frame would be “a tragic mistake,” he said.

“There is no deadline for us,” Christofias said. “I’ve made it clear to Mr Talat… that we cannot accept tight timetables for the start or the end of negotiations to solve the Cyprus problem.” Christofias and Talat will meet July 25 to assess progress in preparatory negotiations and decide when to restart direct peace talks.

The two broke a four-year stalemate in March when they agreed to launch a renewed peace process.

Since then, working groups of experts from the two sides have met regularly in an attempt to bridge the divide on day-to-day as well as more substantial issues, ahead of direct top-level negotiations.

Christofias said it was up to Cypriots to find a settlement that suits them and that doesn’t serve the interests of others. He said Turkey continues to “hold the key” to reaching a deal.

Blue Flags 2008

Posted by evdomada on July 9, 2008

The blue flags for 2008 were announced on the 5th June.  The Hellenic Society for Protection of Nature has handled the international “Blue Flags” programme in Greece since 1992.  The “Blue Flag”, a symbol of quality in about 40 countries today, is awarded with strict criteria to organised beaches and marinas operated by coastal municipalities, hotels and other operators.  The programme aims at cleanliness of sea and beach, safety and proper services for bathers and visitors, creation of environmental sensitivity and active protection of the coastal region.

This year Greece is the second most highest nation with 430 awarded beaches.  The number of beaches rose slightly from last year’s 428 beaches that were awarded the blue flag.  Spain was first with the most clean beaches and Turkey was third.

In Greece, the prefecture with the most blue flags is Chalkidiki with 46 beaches awarded the blue flag, followed by the Dodecanese and Lasithi prefectures.  The municipality awarded the most blue flags is the Municipality of Kallithea in Rhodes awarded with 26 blue flags.  Crete has in total 96 blue flag beaches, Corfu with 32 blue flags and Rhodes 31 blue flags.  Athens and the wider prefecture of Attiki was only awarded 9 clean beaches … not surprised to be honest.

To view all the beaches in Greece and the rest of the world or to find out more about the process and criteria that are used for the assessments you can visit the official blue flag website http://www.blueflag.org
