Justice For Cyprus March in Sydney – 27th July 2008

Posted by evdomada on July 24, 2008

S.E.K.A the Justice for Cyprus Committee has once again organised the memorial event of the Turkish invasion and occupation of Cyprus in 1974.

Last Saturday morning we interviewed Mr Christodoulou the President of the Cyprus Community of Sydney on our radio show.  He made a public admission that the permission to march in the city of Sydney is at risk due to the decreasing number of participants at this memorial event.

He pleaded with the Greek community to make their presence felt this Sunday and to march together so that our government never forgets the plight of the Cypriots that lost their lives, their houses, their homeland.  In particular he wants to see more of the younger generation to make their presence at the event.

As Greeks living abroad, these are the events that we can help and make a contribution to the causes closest to our Hellenism.  The Macedonian name issue, the occupation of Cyprus and the Pontian genocide are 3 of our most important issues that we cannot let up on.

Hopefully we can make an effort to participate.

This is the program for this Sunday 27th July 2008:

10am Memorial Service in memory of the fallen and prayer for the missing persons at the Cathedral of The Annunciation of Our Lady, of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, 242 Cleveland St, Redfern

1:30pm Wreath laying ceremony at the Cenotaph, Martin Place, Sydney

2:15pm Public march via George Street ending at Sydney Town Hall

3:30pm Anti-Occupation gathering with speeches and artistic program at the Cyprus Community Club, 58-76 Stanmore Road, Stanmore

Present at the events will be Mr Andros Kyprianou, Member of the Cyprus Parliament.

Return buses will be available for the return trip from Cnr George & Bathurst Streets to Stanmore.

Any organisation wishing to participate in the wreath laying ceremony at the Martin Place Cenotaph can contact the Cyprus Community Club on 9557 1256.
