Stavros and the Fresh Food Commercial
Posted by evdomada on October 3, 2008
It’s not often when you are watching TV, the commercials start so you go back to reading a magazine and then you hear a voice that you are sure you recognised. You decide to look up and realise that the person in the ad is a family friend.
A great television commercial and well done theio Stavro!

I love this ad and my kids get so excited when it comes on – it’s like seeing Pappou and Yiayia on the TV.
It also provides an important and subtle message to my kids and other Greek-Australian kids – that their culture is represented and seen as important in Australia by big companies and their advertising dollars.
Bravo Stavro and Maria! (and I guess Bravo Woolworths – the ad makes me a bit more brand loyal so it worked on me)!

Athanacia, I’m sorry, I have to disagree. The ad is fine when it starts, but Maria’s continued bitching well after the bird issue has been resolved makes me wonder what it is that Stavros *really* mutters under his breath! I certainly know what it causes ME to mutter.
You say that “It also provides an important and subtle message to my kids and other Greek-Australian kids – that their culture is represented and seen as important in Australia by big companies and their advertising dollars.”
I suggest that far from recognising any given culture as important, Woolworths rather is more interesting in capturing your particular ethnic group as customers, nothing more, nothing less…
The other intruiging thing about the advert is that clearly, Maria and Stavros grow their own veggies, so clearly (A) they don’t buy them from Woolworths, and (B) that would absolutely guarantee their the food the eat would be fresher than that bought at the ‘Fresh Food’ (sic) People!

Luke … I agree that Woolworths are only interested in capturing a particular ethnic group. They are not what I consider a “caring” organisation in their business dealings.
However the ad is great, and taking away the cynicism of big organisations wanting our dollar, it is a celebration of the local Greek culture in Australia.
Yes, Greek women are reknowned for muttering on and on to their husbands, this adds the comedy of the advert
Stavros, who I’ve known personally all my life, actually just mutters “I can finally read my newspaper in peace”.
But I also agree with the part of them growing their own veggies … it intrigued me as well.
