Claiming Australian Pension in Greece

Posted by evdomada on May 28, 2009

There have been a few queries sent through to the Evdomada team relating to claiming the Australian pension while living in Greece.

The number to call to get more information from the Australian Department for Centrelink from Greece is 0080 0611 26209.

They would be able to provide you with all the relevant information.

Also if you go to the website http://www.centrelink.gov.au/internet/internet.nsf/forms/claim_overseas_el.htm you will find more information and forms that can assist you.

Bear in mind that there are conditions as to how many years you worked in Australia and probably a few others that I am not completely aware of.

Please also note that evdomada.net is not in any way an authorised agent for pension claims or queries … just trying to help out with providing links to the appropriate information that could be of assistance.

Modern Greek Studies: An Endangered Species

Posted by evdomada on May 21, 2009

May 21st 2009

During the course my university years, which are now approaching close to 20 years, there have been concerns over the closure of Modern Greek studies across many tertiary institutions in Australia.  Closer to home, the University of New South Wales or UNSW, has always been one of these universities where the threat has been very real. Throughout these years though, Greek community leaders, organisations and student bodies such as Hellsoc have managed to somehow breathe life back into the Modern Greek cause and it has somehow survived.

It seems though we have to battle again with the announcement of the imminent closure of the Modern Greek studies at UNSW.  We have heard through various sources that there are no plans from the university to offer Modern Greek as a subject in 2010 at its own campus.  If students are interested in studying Modern Greek they will have to enrol at another university, reportedly Sydney University.

The Hellenic Society of UNSW Hellsoc had organised a barbecue this week in order to raise awareness of the closure of the Modern Greek studies.  It was announced that it was to be a peaceful gathering, to cook a few souvlakia and spread the message to those that gathered.  There was a petition letter offered to students to sign to send a message to the Dean of the languages department and to the Vice Chancellor.  There was also a promotion for a prize that is being offered to students that enrol in Modern Greek. SMH: A Marriage of Inconvenience

Posted by evdomada on May 20, 2009

Tim Elliot
May 20, 2009

When the playwright Alex Lykos was young his cousins took him aside for a word of advice, Greek style. “When it comes time for you to marry,” they told him, “you must marry a nice Greek Orthodox girl, OK? But if for some reason you can’t possibly marry a nice Greek Orthodox girl, then it’s OK to marry a Catholic. And if you can’t marry a Catholic, then it’s OK to marry an Anglican. But remember, whatever you do, do not marry a Muslim.” Read the rest of this entry »

Google Street View banned in Greece

Posted by evdomada on May 13, 2009

May 13, 2009 – 9:34AM

A privacy watchdog has banned Google from gathering detailed, street-level images in Greece for a planned expansion of its panoramic Street View mapping service until the company provides additional privacy safeguards.

In rejecting Google’s bid to roam Greek streets with cameras mounted on vehicles, Greece’s Data Protection Authority, or DPA, said it wanted clarification from the U.S. internet company on how it will store and process the original images and safeguard them from privacy abuses.

The decision comes despite Google’s assurances that it would blur faces and vehicle license plates when displaying the images online and that it would promptly respond to removal requests.

The DPA also sought clarification on how Google plans to inform the public that its vehicles with mounted cameras are being used to take photographs.

“Simply marking the car is not considered an adequate form of notification,” a DPA statement said. “The authority has reserved judgment on the legality of the service pending the submission of additional information, and until that time will not allow (Google) to start gathering photographs.”

Since launching in 2007, Street View has expanded to more than 100 cities worldwide but has faced privacy complaints from many individuals and institutions that have been photographed. Read the rest of this entry »

Greek Australian Theatre & Hellenism in Australia

Posted by evdomada on May 13, 2009

Autumn has hit Sydney and it’s when our local theatrical talents seem to come out from their summer vacation ready to warm our inner need for cultural events. We have been very fortunate on our 2MM radio show “Evdomada Einai Kai Kylaei” to have hosted promoters, writers and actors of the upcoming shows and find out more about their upcoming stage productions.

We had Alex Lykos returning with his Bulldog Theatre’s home-grown story, a sequel to his popular Alex & Eve titled “Alex & Eve: The Wedding”.  The Christian Greek boy and the Muslim Lebanese girl take their first love encounter to the next step and we are all eager to see how the two families will handle the usual cultural and religious struggles that we are all so well aware of in our multicultural society.

We also had the pleasure to have the Take Away Theatre visit our studio to discuss their tribute show for their 20 year anniversary. They are gearing up for their theatrical presentation “The Show must go on” that will relive some of the stories that have been told during this period.  Take Away Theatre boasts 20 years of home-grown talent from its writers and actors. In fact for this 20 year tribute they have managed to lure both Ada Nicodemou and Barbara Gouskos to a part of the production.  They are two Greek Australian actors that have had extensive experience in Australian television as well as theatre, and what an opportunity we have to see them up close in our local theatres. Ada’s back on stage, but this time there are no dance shoes

Posted by evdomada on May 7, 2009

(Sydney) 30 April, 2009

Ada Nicodemou, star of Channel Seven’s drama Home and Away, and winner of Dancing with the Stars performs on stage in Take Away Theatre’s The Show must go on at Sidetrack Theatre, for six performances only  commencing Wednesday 13 May until 17 May.

Wanting to work in live theatre again, Ada grabbed the opportunity to work with Marrickville- based theatre company, Take Away Theatre.

“The company turns 20 this year and they were working on a new show to celebrate and mark its achievements” Ada said.

“I saw Take Away Theatre’s last show, and I was captivated. I just loved what this company was doing – creating new plays, plays with characters who have been a part of my life, in some way or another.”

The Show must go on is a retrospective piece, performed as a play within a play. It looks at a struggling theatre company and the hardships and angst that it endures. Read the rest of this entry »

Daily Express UK: The Secrets of Eternity Island – Live Longer … on Ikaria

Posted by evdomada on May 7, 2009

Wednesday May 6,2009
Julie Carpenter

The tiny mountainous island of Ikaria in the North Agean Sea is an enviable place to live.

Named after the mythical figure of Icarus it is reputed to be one of the most beautiful of the Greek islands boasting verdant slopes, lush green valleys and spectacular beaches.

And there’s one other thing in its favour: its inhabitants tend to live longer than almost anywhere on Earth.

If the island, with 102 miles of coastline and a population of just 8,300, doesn’t contain the secret to eternal life then it enjoys the next best thing: the secret to a pretty darn long one.

This isolated hideaway has the highest percentage of 90-year-olds anywhere in the world, with one in three living to be sprightly nonagenarians.

“They have about 20 per cent lower rates of cancer, 50 per cent lower rates of heart disease and almost no dementia,” says Dan Buettner, an American author who has been studying why the laid-back inhabitants enjoy such longevity. The island has now been identified as one of the planet’s newest “blues zones”: hot spots where people enjoy unusually long life-spans. Read the rest of this entry »
