Athens Nightlife: Winter 2008

Winter has finally arrived in Athens and that also means that the nightclubs have been at it for a few weeks for this winter’s new shows.  I have tried to compile a list of who is singing where in Athens this winter 2008.  Unfortunately I am not having as much luck with sourcing the information for what’s happening up in the northern capital of Thessaloniki but the search will continue.

Also, it is our intention to keep the information as current as possible, as well as any other performances that will be happening over in Athens for those of us overseas planning a trip to the homeland this winter. Read the rest of this entry »

SAE Australia: Young Expatriates Elect Youth Network Boards

The SAE Youth Network of Victoria and Tasmania held its founding convention in the building of the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria in the presence of roughly 100 young expatriates, aged between 18 and 25.

SAE Youth Networks have already been established in Western Australia (Perth), New Zealand (Wellington), and South Australia (Adelaide) while the youth networks in New South Wales and Queensland are expected to be founded soon.

The proceedings will be completed with a meeting of the youth network boards in Sydney on October 4 and 5 held to elect the board members of the SAE Oceania Youth Network.

Home Sweet Home …

President of the Republic Karolos Papoulias on Thursday visited the new Acropolis Museum, accompanied by Culture Minister Mihalis Liapis. Addressing the Press, the President said the new museum for Greece’s most famous archaeological landmark was a symbol of Greece’s culture and history. In a clear reference to Greece’s bid for the return of the Parthenon Marbles, Papoulias also stressed that the museum was “a sign to some people that do not wish to understand that some things must return to their historic cradle.”

The transfer of the remaining antiquities at the old Acropolis museum is expected to be completed by the end of this month, when the sixth and final caryatid will take up its position in the interior balcony on the new museum’s first level. Once in place, all six caryatids – one of which is a copy, since the original is at the British Museum in London – will be cleaned of the residues of atmospheric pollution and humidity using laser beam treatment.

A visit to The New Acropolis Museum website is a must for the lovers of Greek archeaology, lovers of modern Greek architecture and generally anyone who is a romantic and wannabe Athenian.  Personally I loved the slideshow of the Building photos.

Live at the Kyttaro club – Athens

The duet Dimitris Poulikakos & George Pilali are performing at the Kyttaro club with their new adventures on the 18-19th and 25-26th of January. Blues Wire and Sofia Rapti also are performing on those nights along with the duet.

Laika in Athina Still Exist

It’s great to see that a great laiko line-up can still be found in Athens.

Makis Hristodoulopoulos and Zafeiris Melas are playing at nightclub <<Γέφυρα>> located at Tzitzifies on Leoforos Poseidonos.

For those tired of listening to the modern pop Greek being dished out at us, this show is bound to be a great night of two legends of the skyladiko.  Two singers with countless years of experience on the pista demonstrating what Greek entertainment should be all about – kefi and glendi!

Shows are on from Thursday to Sunday and entry starts at 80 euros and up to 180 euros depending on the drink you buy.

We can only wish that these two singers could appear together on stage here in Australia.

Autumn Nights In Thessaloniki … Greek Nightclub Scene

Usually we focus on what’s happening in Athens but of course we are all aware that Thessaloniki has a just as great music scene. Some may argue that it’s actually superior to Athens.

Well the International Expo is on right now in Thessaloniki and it’s a busy time in the northern capital. Many clubs have started their autumn programme earlier to take advantage of the “tourists” and visitors and they will continue on until the official winter programmes kick-off.

So here is what’s on right now in Thessaloniki!

Πολιτεία
The explosive Nikos Makropoulos is the headline act at Politeia. This would be a great show as in my opinion Makropoulos is one of the best singers on the scene at the moment.

Peggy Zina has migrated north for the autumn season together with Hristos Dantis who would be considered the main act alongside her at Boom. They are joined by Alekos Zazopoulos and the new pin-up star for the young girls Kostas Martakis.

Antonis Remos Summer Tour – Dates and Locations
