Greek defender set for switch

Posted by evdomada on February 4, 2010

Reports in Greece suggest that Olympiakos defender Vasilis Torosidis is on his way to Merseyside to finalise a move to join Liverpool.

The 24-year-old was a much sought after target last summer with the likes of Bayern Munich and Juventus expressing interest and it is claimed that Torosidis is good friends with international team mate and Reds’ defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos, who joined from AEK Athens in August 2009.

With Glen Johnson still injured, Jamie Carragher has been forced to deputise at right-back but manager Rafael Benitez has been tracking Torosidis with intent ahead of the close of the transfer window at 5.00 pm.

In addition to the departures of Andriy Voronin and Andrea Dossena, Liverpool are set to bid farewell to promising youngsters Christopher Buchtmann and Vincent Weijl, who are on the verge of completing moves to Fulham and Dutch outfit Helmond Sport respectively.

Reserve goalkeeper David Martin will to return from his loan spell with high-flying Leeds United on February 10 whilst youth stopper Dean Bouzanis has extended his stay with League Two club Accrington Stanley until the end of May.

Damien Plessis, however, remains at Anfield despite links with a move to Serie A giants Lazio. The French youngster has been named in John McMahon’s reserve team that faces Bolton Wanderers in tonight’s Lancashire FA Senior Cup quarter-final clash.

Also in the squad are Martin Kelly and Nabil El Zhar, who both hope to signal their return from injury in the game at Lancashire FA’s Leyland headquarters this evening.

Ellas & Australia in South Africa for 2010 FIFA World Cup

Posted by evdomada on November 20, 2009

It’s been a while since the evdomada.net site has been updated but what a story to come back to?

Ellas has given its football fans another great day to remember. The 0-1 result for Ellas was enough to grant them a ticket to their 2nd ever FIFA World Cup appearance in South Africa next year.

For the Greek-Australians amongst us, it will be the first tournament with both nations competing at the FIFA World Cup. It will be double the excitement of having 2 teams to follow that will hopefully give all their best.

For the Ellas team, after a very boring first-leg match in Athens on the weekend, they had to get a result away in the cold Ukraine city of Donetsk. Many of us were still hopeful although we also understood how difficult it could be to win away. It was a disciplined performance by Ellas and in particular the man of the match in my opinion, goalkeeper Alexandros Zorbas, who managed to stop the Ukrainians scoring on more than one occassion.

It’s our second FIFA World Cup appearance, however our last tournament at USA 1994 is one that most of us try to forget … painfully. We had 3 losses and didn’t manage to even score a single goal. Let’s hope this time we can at least score a goal (hopefully more than 1) and maybe we can hope for a win??

Australia is appearing in its third FIFA World Cup; back-to-back in fact after a good performance in the last FIFA World Cup tournament at Germany.

And our neighbours New Zealand will also be in their second tournament. The All Whites defeated Bahrain over the 2-leg knockout. Technically this will be the first tournament with 2 Oceania teams being present – although Australia is now in the Asian confederation.

Now we wait for the draw for the groups and who we will be lucky enough to be drawn against.

My friend Michael had a very interesting group scenario. Imagine this group: Italy, Greece, Australia & New Zealand!

One can only imagine what would happen in the cities of Sydney and Melbourne … and Bondi for the All White supporters!

Olympic hoping to end season on a high

Posted by evdomada on August 4, 2009

By Peter Solomakos

Sydney Olympic will play its last match in the 2009 Telechoice Premier League season this Sunday afternoon at Belmore with a clash against former NSL giants and fierce rivals the Marconi Stallions

The pre-season favourites will be looking to end their season on a high following a disappointing 2009 campaign culminating with a 4 – 1 loss at the hands of a rampant Sutherland last week.

Nick Theodorakopoulos will have a full compliment of players to choose from. Tolgay Ozbey will be unavailable as he is still trialing overseas in Turkey.

Marconi under former Olympic coach Lee Sterry will look to cement a spot in the top 3 and only a win will ensure this. He will look to his experienced captain and former Olympic player Nahuel Arrate to rally his young Stallions as they endeavour to claim all three points and give them a good run of form going into the semi finals.

In the corresponding fixture last season the spoils were shared at Belmore with both sides playing out a controversial 2 – 2 draw. Earlier in the year it was Marconi who got the spoils with a 2 – 1 win at Marconi Stadium.

Can Olympic end their season on a high?

Can Olympic put a dent in Marconi’s good run of form before the finals?

These questions will be answered this Sunday at Belmore, with Under 20s kick-off at 12.30pm and the main game kicking off at 3pm.

Gates open at 11.30am.

Euroleague 08-09: Panathinaikos make top 8

Posted by evdomada on February 27, 2009

Panathinaikos defeated Roma away 71-90 and secured their Euroleague Top 8 spot for the next round.  Olympiakos also managed to defeat Prokom at home 84-71 and will be looking to defeat Vitoria away to secure a top spot in their group and proceed to the Top 8 as well.

It will be great to have 2 sides in the Top 8 once again in the Euroleague.  Let’s hope they can both be there for the Final 4 tournament in Germany.

Panathinaikos and Olympiakos will be meeting this weekend in the Greek Basketball Championship.

Olympiakos out of Europe again but Panathinaikos on the front foot

Posted by evdomada on February 27, 2009

Olympiakos’ fans misery was completed this morning with a 2-1 defeat away to St Etienne.  I don’t think any Olympiakos fans really thought that we were going to miraculously win 0-3 away in France but we were hoping for a decent performance.  Well neither happened unfortunately.

Panathinaikos on the other hand showed their determination in the European competition yet again with a well earned 1-1 result away to Villarreal.  I’m not going to make a comment on the penalty given to the Spaniards but we could say that Panatha were unlucky to not have gone back to Athens with a 0-1 advantage.

Although an Olympiakos fan, for the greater good of Greek football I’m hoping that Panatha keep up their great home record in the Champion’s League and qualify through to the next round.

Now as for the derby at Karaiskakis between the “eternals” ….

Olympiakos Self Destruct in Karaiskakis Stadium

Posted by evdomada on February 19, 2009

Another European adventure crashed on the shores of its own coast again for my beloved Olympiakos against the French Ligue 1 team Saint Etienne. The final score at home for the Greeks, a dismal 1-3, leaves us no hope of progressing any further in the UEFA competition for yet another season .

Until next season Europe, adieu …

UEFA CUP: Olympiakos make a good move for the next round

Posted by evdomada on November 28, 2008

Finally some European delight for the Red fans of Piraeus who managed a great win over Benfica this morning.  The final score was 5-1 and it was a win that Olympiakos had to make if they want to have any chance of progressing to the next round of the UEFA Cup.

Below is the post-game report from uefa.com

Champions League: Panathinaikos and Anorthosis Drawn Together

Posted by evdomada on August 29, 2008

Panathinaikos and Anorthosis have been drawn together in Group B of the UEFA Champions League.  Their other opponents are Internazionale (aka Inter Milan) and Werder Bremen.

Panathinaikos seem well placed to take 2nd spot behind Inter unless more surprises are installed in this season’s competition.

Matchday 1 of the UEFA Champions League kicks off on September 16th.

Here is a list of all the groups and the teams:

European Football – Cypriot teams outnumber Greeks

Posted by evdomada on August 29, 2008

The Cypriots have outdone the Greeks this year in their European presence with outstanding results.  Anorthosis are through to the group stage of the European Champions League, while Omonoia and APOEL are through to the next stage of the UEFA Cup.

For Greece only Panathinaikos are through to the group stage of the European Champions League and only Olympiakos will be in the next stage of the UEFA Cup.  AEK and Aris unfortunately stumbled in their qualifiers and will no longer partake in the European competitions for this season.

Anorthosis Famagusta managed to push Olympiakos out of the Champions League for 2008/2009.  It will be the first time in 12 years that Olympiakos will be absent from the tournament.

Anorthosis outplayed Olympiacks in the first leg in Cyprus managing a 3-0 victory against the Greek champions.  For Olympiakos to have overcome this hurdle, they needed at least a 3-0 victory in Karaiskakis Stadium to force extra-time and then penalties; or a 4-0 win for outright victory.  They managed to take 35 shots at the Anorthosis’ goal but only one was scored.  The final 1-0 result for the Greeks was not enough.

Omonoia from Cyprus also managed to end AEK’s European adventures for 2008/2009.  The Cypriots surprised the Greeks with a 0-1 victory in Athens and this morning were able to hold out for a 2-2 draw in Nicosia.

And the third Cypriot team to proceed to the next round of their European dream are APOEL who managed a 3-3 result away in extra-time and go through on the away goals ruling.

Aris unfortunately lost to Slaven this morning 2-0 and their 1-0 win in the first leg was not enough to get them through to the next round.

Here are the results of the Greek and Cypriot teams:

Champions League: Panathinaikos - Sparta Prague 1-0 (3-1 aggregate)
Champions League: Olympiakos – Anorthosis 1-0 (1-3 aggregate)

UEFA: Red Star - APOEL 3-3 (3-3 aggregate APOEL through on away goals)
UEFA: Omonoia - AEK 2-2 (3-2 aggregate)
UEFA: Slaven - Aris 2-0 (2-1 aggregate)
