Greek defender set for switch

Posted by evdomada on February 4, 2010

Reports in Greece suggest that Olympiakos defender Vasilis Torosidis is on his way to Merseyside to finalise a move to join Liverpool.

The 24-year-old was a much sought after target last summer with the likes of Bayern Munich and Juventus expressing interest and it is claimed that Torosidis is good friends with international team mate and Reds’ defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos, who joined from AEK Athens in August 2009.

With Glen Johnson still injured, Jamie Carragher has been forced to deputise at right-back but manager Rafael Benitez has been tracking Torosidis with intent ahead of the close of the transfer window at 5.00 pm.

In addition to the departures of Andriy Voronin and Andrea Dossena, Liverpool are set to bid farewell to promising youngsters Christopher Buchtmann and Vincent Weijl, who are on the verge of completing moves to Fulham and Dutch outfit Helmond Sport respectively.

Reserve goalkeeper David Martin will to return from his loan spell with high-flying Leeds United on February 10 whilst youth stopper Dean Bouzanis has extended his stay with League Two club Accrington Stanley until the end of May.

Damien Plessis, however, remains at Anfield despite links with a move to Serie A giants Lazio. The French youngster has been named in John McMahon’s reserve team that faces Bolton Wanderers in tonight’s Lancashire FA Senior Cup quarter-final clash.

Also in the squad are Martin Kelly and Nabil El Zhar, who both hope to signal their return from injury in the game at Lancashire FA’s Leyland headquarters this evening.

Posted by evdomada on August 29, 2008

Panathinaikos and Anorthosis have been drawn together in Group B of the UEFA Champions League.  Their other opponents are Internazionale (aka Inter Milan) and Werder Bremen.

Panathinaikos seem well placed to take 2nd spot behind Inter unless more surprises are installed in this season’s competition.

Matchday 1 of the UEFA Champions League kicks off on September 16th.

Here is a list of all the groups and the teams:

European Football – Cypriot teams outnumber Greeks

Posted by evdomada on August 29, 2008

The Cypriots have outdone the Greeks this year in their European presence with outstanding results.  Anorthosis are through to the group stage of the European Champions League, while Omonoia and APOEL are through to the next stage of the UEFA Cup.

For Greece only Panathinaikos are through to the group stage of the European Champions League and only Olympiakos will be in the next stage of the UEFA Cup.  AEK and Aris unfortunately stumbled in their qualifiers and will no longer partake in the European competitions for this season.

Anorthosis Famagusta managed to push Olympiakos out of the Champions League for 2008/2009.  It will be the first time in 12 years that Olympiakos will be absent from the tournament.

Anorthosis outplayed Olympiacks in the first leg in Cyprus managing a 3-0 victory against the Greek champions.  For Olympiakos to have overcome this hurdle, they needed at least a 3-0 victory in Karaiskakis Stadium to force extra-time and then penalties; or a 4-0 win for outright victory.  They managed to take 35 shots at the Anorthosis’ goal but only one was scored.  The final 1-0 result for the Greeks was not enough.

Omonoia from Cyprus also managed to end AEK’s European adventures for 2008/2009.  The Cypriots surprised the Greeks with a 0-1 victory in Athens and this morning were able to hold out for a 2-2 draw in Nicosia.

And the third Cypriot team to proceed to the next round of their European dream are APOEL who managed a 3-3 result away in extra-time and go through on the away goals ruling.

Aris unfortunately lost to Slaven this morning 2-0 and their 1-0 win in the first leg was not enough to get them through to the next round.

Here are the results of the Greek and Cypriot teams:

Champions League: Panathinaikos - Sparta Prague 1-0 (3-1 aggregate)
Champions League: Olympiakos – Anorthosis 1-0 (1-3 aggregate)

UEFA: Red Star - APOEL 3-3 (3-3 aggregate APOEL through on away goals)
UEFA: Omonoia - AEK 2-2 (3-2 aggregate)
UEFA: Slaven - Aris 2-0 (2-1 aggregate)

Euro 2008 Review – Valiant Austria Falls at Last Hurdle

Posted by evdomada on June 18, 2008

Germany captain Michael Ballack booked his side’s place in the UEFA EURO 2008™ quarter-finals with a thunderous free-kick, ending the hopes of Austria despite a valiant effort from the co-hosts in Vienna.

To jump ahead of their opponents & take the second qualifying spot, Austria had to beat their neighbours Germany for the first time since they defeated West Germany in 1986. Not an easy feat to say the least.

The home team did enjoy long periods of possession but lacked the cutting edge upfront. Ballack settled the tight contest with his 49th minute clinical set piece. Coach Joachim Löw with Austria’s coach Josef Hickersberger were remarkably sent to the stands just before half-time. Low however can look forward to a quarter final showdown against Group A winners Portugal in Basel on Thursday. Read the rest of this entry »

Euro 2008 Review – Hellas Falter and Turkey Survives

Posted by evdomada on June 16, 2008

The Greeks are officially no longer the European Champions as their Euro 2008 defence campaign is all over. No one really thought that they were going to win it again but the loss to the Russians made it a formality.

Some will blame Nikopolidis for the loss but really his calamitous blunder made no difference to the real problem of the team.

Greece cannot score. Read the rest of this entry »

Euro 2008 Review – Austrian Last Gasp Reprieve

Posted by evdomada on June 13, 2008

It looked like the co-hosts would be beaten to their second successive Group B defeat after Roger Guerriro’s (became nationalised in the Spring) suspect 30th minute strike gave Poland a lead for over an hour before Vastic saved the day with a time added on penalty strike. Also it gave Austria faint hopes of progressing to the Quarter Finals. First they must beat Germany who lost earlier to Croatia 2-1.

Austria coach Josef Hickersberger decided to shake things up after the opening defeat by Croatia. Not only did he revert to the basic 4-4-2 model he also introduced three new players — attacking midfield duo Ümit Korkmaz and Christoph Leitgeb and Italy-based right-back György Garics.

All three added zest to the team and they began in whirlwind fashion, setting determinedly about a Polish defence, when they were caught out too far upfield. Austria squandered three to four golden chances to get Austria ahead after 20 minutes. Twice Austria raced clean through, creating one-on-one opportunities that were spurned by Martin Harnik and Leitgeb or, rather, prevented by the sprawling figure of goalkeeper Boruc, who also made another fine close-range stop from Harnik inbetween.Poland somehow found themselves, against the run of play, back into the game and were awarded Guerriro’s goal even though there was every good reason it should of been called off side. Euro 2008 Review – Piratiko in troubled Waters

Posted by evdomada on June 11, 2008

As the saying goes your only as good as your last game, so in terms of the Piratiko’s Hellas performance earlier this morning, they have a lot of work to do in a short period of time for their next match against Russia.

Firstly, this game did not reach any heights. An Ibrahimovic strike and that’s about it. Maybe a chance here or there to both sides but nothing to shout about. Sweden didn’t do much either as indicated by their ability to ball watch Hellas defenders passing the ball between each other without any pressure from the Swedish forwards, but were slightly better than Hellas.

Hellas look like a team four years too old. In the crucial midfield they are slow to the ball and to react. They also lack creativity, Karagounis does his best but Basinas should have been “retired” from the Piratiko nearly two years ago. The middle should have been rebuilt over the years with new blood but coaches like to “cling” onto deadwood as they don’t like taking too many chances. Mind you the whole team should have been rebuilt after the campaign of Portugal. A player like Zagorakis is surely missed and Hellas have not replaced him nor his leadership skills.

Euro 2008 Review – Ellas Disappointing Against Sweden

Posted by evdomada on June 11, 2008

No realistic Greek fan thought that we were going to win the Euro again but deep down we all wanted to see a fight from the defending champions.

Unfortunately this morning we saw a Greek side that has had the same problems for the last 4 years since their Euro triumph. Very simply, we struggle to score. We have very little imagination up front and unfortunately our strength in defence let us down.

The Swedes were not a much better side than the Greek team but they took their chances. That’s what tournament football is about. They showed the Greek team some respect and were not as adventurous in the first half. Both teams were reluctant to attack outright and both managers seemed to be happy to keep their teams playing in this mode. Read the rest of this entry »
