07/08 UEFA Champions League Final

Posted by evdomada on May 20, 2008

It’s on again this Thursday morning and unfortunately its an all EPL final: Manchester United versus Chelsea. Personally it’s a let down to see 2 teams from the same domestic competition to meet in the final. Not sure if I speak for many football lovers but I would prefer to see a match between clubs from different competitions.

In any case, the two finalists have proven themselves the best teams to get to the final. It was a long and tiring road to get to Moscow for both Man United and Chelsea and we truly do hope that we see a great game.

Based on form and previous experience, I think that Manchester United should prove a difficult task for Chelsea and will take the title once again. Chelsea’s midfielder stars will need to lift and take control of the middle if they want to “choke” Ronaldo of any goal scoring opportunities. A lot rests on Drogba’s shoulders for Chelsea whereas Manchester has many more options to find the net.

For Australian east coast viewers the coverage commences on SBS at 4am this Thursday morning 22nd May.

Moscow local kick-off time is 20:45 in case you want to work out your locations local time for the match kick off.

Greek Superleague: Playoffs and Greek Cup … A Final Wrap Up

Posted by evdomada on May 19, 2008

Olympiakos defeated Aris 2-0 on Saturday evening in the Greek Cup. The game was played in the northern Greek capital Thessaloniki which could have been seen as an advantage for Aris but Olympiakos were too dominant and too powerful.

Olympiakos scored in the 33rd minute when Kovacevic netted an impressive header from a perfectly delivered cross from the Argentinian man of the match Galeti. A similar situation was given to Olympiakos in the 53rd minute when another well-delivered cross from Galeti was met with a powerful header by Zevlakov that ended up in the back of the net.

It was another impressive performance from the Superleague champions and definitely the strongest team in the competition this season. Read the rest of this entry »

Euroleague: Olympiakos Last 40 Minutes

Posted by evdomada on April 9, 2008

Olympiakos is Greece’s last representative team in the Euroleague championship and they are 40 minutes away from either making it to the Final 4 in Madrid or saying farewell for another season.

They managed the surprise of the season by winning the first game in Moscow but were unable to secure their Final 4 spot in Piraeus, losing the second match. Now they need another miraculous performance in Moscow for the third and final match.

The match is being played this morning at 02:15 (Thursday 10/4) for those that have access to SKAI TV. Otherwise try and tune into Sport-FM radio or ERA Sport radio via the internet.

Final point, it’s disappointing that no sports television broadcaster in Australia, including ESPN, is showing ANY of the Euroleague matches – live or delayed!!! Unless it’s NBA basketball it seems that the Australians aren’t interested???

Euroleague Basketball: Olympiakos through to Top 8

Posted by evdomada on March 23, 2008

After a long absence, past European Champions Olympiakos have managed to get themselves into the top 8 of the Euroleague championship. Olympiakos defeated Spanish giants Real Madrid in Piraeus 72-63.

Unfortunately the current Euroleague Champions Panathinaikos as well as Aris were unable to get through the Top 16 group stage.

Panathinaikos lost away to Partizan in Belgrade 82-73 and although Aris defeated Lietuvos Rytas 83-74 in their final game it wasn’t enough to get them through.

Olympiakos do not have an easy opponent in the next round. They will need to over come the in form CSKA Moscow where their ex-team member Papaloukas is now playing his professional basketball.

The complete quarter final matches are as follows:

CSKA Moscow – Olympiakos
Tau Ceramica – Partizan Igokea
Maccabi Elite – AXA FC Barcelona
Montepaschi Siena – Fenerbahce Ulker

Euroleague Basketball: Top 16 Last Games

Posted by evdomada on March 18, 2008

European champions Panathinaikos and fellow Greek team Olympiakos still have their chances alive to make the final 8 teams in the Euroleague Basketball championship. Aris mathematically still has a chance as well, only that they will need to win and rely on the group leaders to win their game as well.

Panathinaikos will need to win away to Partizan in Belgrade. Not an easy feat but not impossible for the number 1 ranked European side.

Olympiakos might be playing their match at home but they have a much tougher challenge needing to defeat Spanish giants Real Madrid in Piraeus.

Aris have an even more difficult road to the top 8 needing to defeat Lietuvos and also relying on Tau to defeat Fenerbahce in Turkey.

Panathinaikos and Olympiakos games are being played on 20/3 and Aris on 19/3.

Champions League: Olympiakos European Adventure Cut Short Again

Posted by evdomada on March 6, 2008

As most experts had predicted, Chelsea easily moved to the next round of the Champions League defeating Olympiakos 3-0. It’s not that many of us Olympiakos fans were hopeful of a victory in Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge home ground but deep down we were hoping for a draw.

Instead the Greek champions played an abysmal game and never looked like they were in the game. Chelsea were never pressured and easily created many chances to score. Olympiakos on the other hand looked nothing like the team that actually managed to play a decent game against Chelsea 2 weeks ago at Karaiskaki. Their attack lacked … everything. In fact I can safely say that Olympiakos did not threaten the Chelsea penalty box once in the first half.

The second half had a few moments of excitement but the score was already 3-0. Antzas had a good chance but Cudicinni saved well and Belluschi had a wonderful strike that hit the crossbar. In fact the 2 substitutes for Olympiakos, Leonardo and Belluschi were able to bring some creativity and a spark to their attack.

The other teams to join Chelsea in the next round are Arsenal, Roma, Manchester United, Fernebahce and Schalke.

Liverpool and Inter Milan will be playing their second leg match next week for the last spot in quarter finals.

LuaLua ruled out of Chelsea trip

Posted by evdomada on March 3, 2008

Sunday 2 March 2008

Lomana LuaLua’s hopes of a return to England to face Chelsea FC on Wednesday have been dashed after the Olympiacos CFP striker was ruled out for six weeks with a dislocated shoulder.

More woe
The 27-year-old suffered the injury to his left shoulder in Olympiacos’ 1-1 draw with Asteras Tripolis FC on Saturday and following an initial prognosis he has been sidelined until mid-April. LuaLua will undergo an extensive examination on Monday to assess the full extent of the damage, and may need surgery. It means more misery for the former Newcastle United FC man, who missed the first leg of Olympiacos’ UEFA Champions League last-16 tie with Chelsea with a foot injury, and gives coach Panagiotis Lemonis a headache as he is already without winger Luciano Galletti due to a thigh strain.

Chelsea bans Greeks from buying tickets

Posted by evdomada on March 3, 2008

By Grahame L. Jones, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
March 1, 2008

If Alexi Lalas or Peter Vagenas wanted to make a quick trip to England to watch Chelsea play Olympiakos of Greece in a European Champions League match on Wednesday, they would be out of luck.

The Galaxy supposedly has a “special relationship” with the English Premier League club, but that would not make any difference.

Lalas, the Galaxy’s president, and Vagenas, its veteran midfielder, both have Greek surnames, and Chelsea, astonishingly, is banning anyone with Greek roots from obtaining tickets to the game. Or at least those who are not official members of the club.

“Nonmembers of a Greek nationality buying tickets for the Olympiakos game will have their orders canceled,” Chelsea said on its official website.

It already has happened. English newspapers reported that one fan, Peter Pakos, had tried to buy two tickets to the match for almost $200, only to be rebuffed. “It’s incredible discrimination,” Pakos told reporters. “It’s shortsighted and clumsy. We may have a Greek background, but we’re Chelsea fans through and through.”

Stung by such unwanted publicity, Chelsea late Friday said that its policy extended only to those buying tickets online. Those buying in person would not be affected, it said.

The club said its policy was in accordance with UEFA regulations on the segregation of fans, and that it was trying to prevent Olympiakos supporters in Greece from buying tickets online for seats reserved for Chelsea fans.

Chelsea and Olympiakos tied, 0-0, in Greece in the first game and Wednesday’s winner will advance to the Champions League quarterfinals.

UEFA Cup – Round of 32: Greek Teams Panathinaikos and AEK

Posted by evdomada on February 15, 2008

Panathinaikos traveled to Scotland and returned with a good result for the second leg. They managed a 0-0 draw with Rangers and I believe they have a strong chance to manage to get the result they need in Athens to proceed to the next round.

Greeks beat Finland 2-1 in late rally

Posted by evdomada on February 7, 2008

NICOSIA, Feb 6 (Reuters)

European champions Greece scored twice in five minutes as they recovered from a goal down to beat Finland 2-1 in a friendly international in Cyprus on Wednesday.

Finland dominated most of the first half but Jonatan Johansson lost two good scoring chances in the seventh and 24th minutes.

Defender Sotiris Kyrgiakos missed a chance for Greece when he shot over the bar just before halftime and the roles were reversed in the second half with the Greeks in full control of the midfield.

Finland opened the scoring with a shot from captain Jari Litmanen in the 66th minute though the lead was short-lived.

Striker Angelos Haristeas equalised with a header a minute later and Costas Katsouranis volleyed the winner in the 72nd.
