Greece’s Athletes and Doping at Beijing 2008

Posted by evdomada on August 18, 2008

Greece’s involvement in the 2008 Beijing Olympics has not been its best.

The weightlifting team was disqualified weeks before the games, another athlete sprinter Tasos Gousis was caught the week before we started … Katerina Thanou was not allowed to participate even though she has served her “sentence”.

And the latest, on the day we finally win a few medals, one of our main medal hopes Fani Halkia who won gold in Athens in the 400m hurdles, gets caught with a doping test.

Fani was tested in Japan where the Greek team was warming up prior to arriving in Beijing.

What’s strange about this story is that Fani Halkia is a volunteer in the WADA’s anti-doping testing scheme.

This is an excerpt from the Canberra Times online edition (source) ..

“‘I am shocked,” she said yesterday morning. ”I have undergone more testing than anyone else.”

Halkia, 29, was tested a few days before the Beijing Olympics in Japan, where Greece’s track and field team had been training.

She said she had volunteered to take part in the agency’s pilot program in which athletes submitted themselves voluntarily to regular testing.

Halkia, who has moved out of the Olympic village, said she was sorry she could not take part in the Games and that she had expected to make the 400m hurdles final.

The 400m hurdles first-round heats were being run last night.

Halkia said she did not know how the banned substance was found in her sample.

Fifteen Greek athletes, including Halkia, have tested positive for methyltrienolone. They include 11 weight-lifters, swimmer Yannis Drymonakos and sprinter Tassos Gousis, who was sent home a few days before the Olympics.

The International Olympic Committee has also barred sprinter Katerina Thanou, from Beijing, for her role in a drug-testing scandal at the Athens Games.”

Why then has she been found with an illegal substance?? Someone that has volunteered for such a scheme, we would think is one of the “clean” athletes.

I must admit that I am confused with this one.

And I am not one of these Greeks that believes that there is a conspiracy against Greek athletes. Other nations are being caught too, and if our athletes are  found guilty then they deserve to serve the punishment.

Its just that we have had so many athletes caught this time around, together with the Kenteris-Thanou fiasco at Athens, that we have surely tainted at these Olympics.

Euro 2008 Review – Valiant Austria Falls at Last Hurdle

Posted by evdomada on June 18, 2008

Germany captain Michael Ballack booked his side’s place in the UEFA EURO 2008™ quarter-finals with a thunderous free-kick, ending the hopes of Austria despite a valiant effort from the co-hosts in Vienna.

To jump ahead of their opponents & take the second qualifying spot, Austria had to beat their neighbours Germany for the first time since they defeated West Germany in 1986. Not an easy feat to say the least.

The home team did enjoy long periods of possession but lacked the cutting edge upfront. Ballack settled the tight contest with his 49th minute clinical set piece. Coach Joachim Löw with Austria’s coach Josef Hickersberger were remarkably sent to the stands just before half-time. Low however can look forward to a quarter final showdown against Group A winners Portugal in Basel on Thursday. Read the rest of this entry »

Euro 2008 Review – Hellas Falter and Turkey Survives

Posted by evdomada on June 16, 2008

The Greeks are officially no longer the European Champions as their Euro 2008 defence campaign is all over. No one really thought that they were going to win it again but the loss to the Russians made it a formality.

Some will blame Nikopolidis for the loss but really his calamitous blunder made no difference to the real problem of the team.

Greece cannot score. Read the rest of this entry »

Euro 2008 Review – Austrian Last Gasp Reprieve

Posted by evdomada on June 13, 2008

It looked like the co-hosts would be beaten to their second successive Group B defeat after Roger Guerriro’s (became nationalised in the Spring) suspect 30th minute strike gave Poland a lead for over an hour before Vastic saved the day with a time added on penalty strike. Also it gave Austria faint hopes of progressing to the Quarter Finals. First they must beat Germany who lost earlier to Croatia 2-1.

Austria coach Josef Hickersberger decided to shake things up after the opening defeat by Croatia. Not only did he revert to the basic 4-4-2 model he also introduced three new players — attacking midfield duo Ümit Korkmaz and Christoph Leitgeb and Italy-based right-back György Garics.

All three added zest to the team and they began in whirlwind fashion, setting determinedly about a Polish defence, when they were caught out too far upfield. Austria squandered three to four golden chances to get Austria ahead after 20 minutes. Twice Austria raced clean through, creating one-on-one opportunities that were spurned by Martin Harnik and Leitgeb or, rather, prevented by the sprawling figure of goalkeeper Boruc, who also made another fine close-range stop from Harnik inbetween.Poland somehow found themselves, against the run of play, back into the game and were awarded Guerriro’s goal even though there was every good reason it should of been called off side. Euro 2008 Review – Piratiko in troubled Waters

Posted by evdomada on June 11, 2008

As the saying goes your only as good as your last game, so in terms of the Piratiko’s Hellas performance earlier this morning, they have a lot of work to do in a short period of time for their next match against Russia.

Firstly, this game did not reach any heights. An Ibrahimovic strike and that’s about it. Maybe a chance here or there to both sides but nothing to shout about. Sweden didn’t do much either as indicated by their ability to ball watch Hellas defenders passing the ball between each other without any pressure from the Swedish forwards, but were slightly better than Hellas.

Hellas look like a team four years too old. In the crucial midfield they are slow to the ball and to react. They also lack creativity, Karagounis does his best but Basinas should have been “retired” from the Piratiko nearly two years ago. The middle should have been rebuilt over the years with new blood but coaches like to “cling” onto deadwood as they don’t like taking too many chances. Mind you the whole team should have been rebuilt after the campaign of Portugal. A player like Zagorakis is surely missed and Hellas have not replaced him nor his leadership skills.

Euro 2008 Review – Ellas Disappointing Against Sweden

Posted by evdomada on June 11, 2008

No realistic Greek fan thought that we were going to win the Euro again but deep down we all wanted to see a fight from the defending champions.

Unfortunately this morning we saw a Greek side that has had the same problems for the last 4 years since their Euro triumph. Very simply, we struggle to score. We have very little imagination up front and unfortunately our strength in defence let us down.

The Swedes were not a much better side than the Greek team but they took their chances. That’s what tournament football is about. They showed the Greek team some respect and were not as adventurous in the first half. Both teams were reluctant to attack outright and both managers seemed to be happy to keep their teams playing in this mode. Read the rest of this entry »

Euro 2008: Greece friendly with Armenia

Posted by evdomada on June 3, 2008

Thanks to my recently added Setanta Sports subscription, I was able to watch Ellas last night take on Armenia in a pre Euro 2008 warm-up match.

I know it was a friendly and I know it’s an opportunity to try a few new things. However the lowly ranked Armenians caused more trouble than expected for the European champions. As the commentator concluded at the end of the coverage, Sweden, Russia and Spain will have nothing to fear from the Greeks based on this performance.

For those of us that have followed Greece’s matches from the World Cup qualifiers, through to the Euro qualifiers, will know what I mean about the team having this inability to threaten the opposing goal.

Reports claim that King Otto wasn’t concerned with the result or the performance of his players. Maybe it’s his ploy to bring Greece back into its traditional underdog status.

Although I refuse to be negative we can only hope that the team can improve on this performance.

07/08 UEFA Champions League Final

Posted by evdomada on May 20, 2008

It’s on again this Thursday morning and unfortunately its an all EPL final: Manchester United versus Chelsea. Personally it’s a let down to see 2 teams from the same domestic competition to meet in the final. Not sure if I speak for many football lovers but I would prefer to see a match between clubs from different competitions.

In any case, the two finalists have proven themselves the best teams to get to the final. It was a long and tiring road to get to Moscow for both Man United and Chelsea and we truly do hope that we see a great game.

Based on form and previous experience, I think that Manchester United should prove a difficult task for Chelsea and will take the title once again. Chelsea’s midfielder stars will need to lift and take control of the middle if they want to “choke” Ronaldo of any goal scoring opportunities. A lot rests on Drogba’s shoulders for Chelsea whereas Manchester has many more options to find the net.

For Australian east coast viewers the coverage commences on SBS at 4am this Thursday morning 22nd May.

Moscow local kick-off time is 20:45 in case you want to work out your locations local time for the match kick off.

Greek Superleague: Playoffs and Greek Cup … A Final Wrap Up

Posted by evdomada on May 19, 2008

Olympiakos defeated Aris 2-0 on Saturday evening in the Greek Cup. The game was played in the northern Greek capital Thessaloniki which could have been seen as an advantage for Aris but Olympiakos were too dominant and too powerful.

Olympiakos scored in the 33rd minute when Kovacevic netted an impressive header from a perfectly delivered cross from the Argentinian man of the match Galeti. A similar situation was given to Olympiakos in the 53rd minute when another well-delivered cross from Galeti was met with a powerful header by Zevlakov that ended up in the back of the net.

It was another impressive performance from the Superleague champions and definitely the strongest team in the competition this season. Read the rest of this entry »
