Olympic hoping to end season on a high

Posted by evdomada on August 4, 2009

By Peter Solomakos

Sydney Olympic will play its last match in the 2009 Telechoice Premier League season this Sunday afternoon at Belmore with a clash against former NSL giants and fierce rivals the Marconi Stallions

The pre-season favourites will be looking to end their season on a high following a disappointing 2009 campaign culminating with a 4 – 1 loss at the hands of a rampant Sutherland last week.

Nick Theodorakopoulos will have a full compliment of players to choose from. Tolgay Ozbey will be unavailable as he is still trialing overseas in Turkey.

Marconi under former Olympic coach Lee Sterry will look to cement a spot in the top 3 and only a win will ensure this. He will look to his experienced captain and former Olympic player Nahuel Arrate to rally his young Stallions as they endeavour to claim all three points and give them a good run of form going into the semi finals.

In the corresponding fixture last season the spoils were shared at Belmore with both sides playing out a controversial 2 – 2 draw. Earlier in the year it was Marconi who got the spoils with a 2 – 1 win at Marconi Stadium.

Can Olympic end their season on a high?

Can Olympic put a dent in Marconi’s good run of form before the finals?

These questions will be answered this Sunday at Belmore, with Under 20s kick-off at 12.30pm and the main game kicking off at 3pm.

Gates open at 11.30am.

Children Under 16 : FREE
Consession: $ 6
Adult: $12

Souvlakia on rolls all day ($5)

Alex & Eve The Wedding @ Enmore Theatre

Posted by evdomada on July 9, 2009

After the huge success of Alex & Eve The Wedding at The Factory, Alex Lykos and his Bulldog Theatre cast and crew are taking on the Enmore Theatre.

Alex & Eve The Wedding had a dream run at The Factory with almost every performance night being a sell-out show and deservedly so.  It’s a very clever and witty story that makes the audience laugh while still tackling an issue that we have seen so many times in our family lives.

So if you haven’t had the chance to go see the play or for those of us that enjoyed it so much and want to see it again, the opportunity is now available.

There will only be 2 shows at the Enmore Theatre on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd August.

For more details and to book tickets go directly to the Enmore Theatre website … click here.

Alex & Eve The Wedding – Extended Season!

Posted by evdomada on June 15, 2009

Alex and Eve The Wedding has been a great success for Alex Lykos’ Bulldog Theatre production team and his cast.

To be honest I have lost track as to how many additional shows have been added to the original scheduled dates but I do know that due to the popularity of the show, there are 3 shows left!!

Reviews have been great both from the younger crowds but also from the older first generation crowds that have made the effort to see the comedy.  I have yet to meet someone that hasn’t found it entertaining … so go along before it’s too late and take your parents and relos out for an good night out.

The additional dates are Friday 19th June, Friday 26th June and Saturday 27th June.

Booking tickets is simple, just call on 9550 3666 or go to www.factorytheatre.com.au.

The Factory Theatre is at 105 Victoria Road Marrickville, the old Palati nightlclub for those that may remember that far back.

Hatzigiannis in Sydney – October 2009

Posted by evdomada on June 15, 2009

Michalis Hatzigiannis is finally coming to Sydney to perform in concert.  It’s not Hatzigiannis first visit to Australia but it will be his first concert in our harbour city.  The last time he was in Australia his fans had to travel to Melbourne to see him perform.

The concert date in Sydney is Saturday 17th October and will be held at the Sydney Entertainment Centre.  For those of us fortunate to see Notis Sfakianakis last night, I must say that the venue is as good as it gets for Greek singers visiting Sydney.  Those in the Cabaret seats seemed to be having a great time and those in the Circle still found ways to dance and have a great night.

Cabaret seating for the Hatzigiannis concert are already on sale.

For information and cabaret seating call:

0404 428 841
0414 410 281
02 9787 5344

Cirlce tickets will be on sale from the 17th June. Prices start from $49 + booking fee, which I think works out to $55.30 up to $144 but please refer to the ticketing agencies for accurate pricing as they may be subject to change etcetera etcetera and I cannot guarantee any of the prices.

Cirlce tickets will be available through:

Ticketmaster 1300 883 622

Metropolis Music Earlwood 9787 4825

Olympic Entertainment Belmore 9750 8758

Modern Greek Studies: An Endangered Species

Posted by evdomada on May 21, 2009

May 21st 2009

During the course my university years, which are now approaching close to 20 years, there have been concerns over the closure of Modern Greek studies across many tertiary institutions in Australia.  Closer to home, the University of New South Wales or UNSW, has always been one of these universities where the threat has been very real. Throughout these years though, Greek community leaders, organisations and student bodies such as Hellsoc have managed to somehow breathe life back into the Modern Greek cause and it has somehow survived.

It seems though we have to battle again with the announcement of the imminent closure of the Modern Greek studies at UNSW.  We have heard through various sources that there are no plans from the university to offer Modern Greek as a subject in 2010 at its own campus.  If students are interested in studying Modern Greek they will have to enrol at another university, reportedly Sydney University.

The Hellenic Society of UNSW Hellsoc had organised a barbecue this week in order to raise awareness of the closure of the Modern Greek studies.  It was announced that it was to be a peaceful gathering, to cook a few souvlakia and spread the message to those that gathered.  There was a petition letter offered to students to sign to send a message to the Dean of the languages department and to the Vice Chancellor.  There was also a promotion for a prize that is being offered to students that enrol in Modern Greek.
